My Wedding & Honeymoon: Day 4

June 17, 2011

There was absolute silence in the taxi as Lucas and I made our way to the airport to pick up my family.  I kept telling myself that there was nothing to worry about, that my Mom had made it onto the plane.  Lucas sympathetically held my hand.  Once we arrived, we made our way to the arrivals area and while we anxiously waited, Lucas realized that he had left his phone in the taxi.  Not the best timing in the world to lose our lifeline!  Now none of the wedding vendors or guests could get in touch with us.  We decided to deal with that crisis later and turned our attention to finding my family.  An hour passed by their scheduled arrival time and yet there was no sign of them.  Just as panic began to set in I heard a familiar voice exclaim, “Sis!”  I turned around and saw my brother running towards me, with both of my parents following behind him.  Their flight had come into a different terminal than what we had been told.  My excitement to see them was brief, once I discovered that 1) their luggage (with all of the wedding stuff) was lost in transit and 2) they were quite sick with laryngitis.  I come from a family of eternal optimists though and we decided to focus on the positives: we were all safe and sound in Buenos Aires and soon we would be celebrating the marriage of Lucas and I.  From the airport we went straight to our home away from home for the next week, which was an apartment in Recoleta.

Since their was nothing to unpack, I decided that my family’s first experience in Buenos Aires should be something extra special.  Just three blocks away from the apartment happened to be one of my favorite places in the city, La Recoleta Cemetery.  It is the city’s oldest and most celebrated cemetery, housing the tombs of many of the leading figures of Argentinean history, including the famed Eva Perón (Evita).  The architecture that is found there will astonish and I highly suggest spending several hours getting lost amongst the maze of stone and marble tombs while taking in the historical significance.  It is a calm, peaceful spot amidst an incredibly hectic city.  This is certainly one of the jewels of Buenos Aires.

Thus, come stroll along on a photographic journey with me through this resting place of the dead and make sure to take a moment to reflect on your own life and appreciate all of freedoms and pleasures that being alive brings. . .

And in case you are looking for a future burial spot, the grave next to Evita’s is currently up for sale!

After a long day of exploration we were all ready for our first sleep in the apartment.  Yes, the wedding stress was continuing to amass, but I was the happiest woman in the world to have my most treasured loved ones around me in such an important time in my life.

LOVE your photos from the cemetery – we really enjoyed walking around there. I’m still trying to decide if I love it as much as Pere Lachaise, but it’s definitely the close second for best cemeteries in the world =)

Thank you so much, I’m pretty proud of them as well! I have yet to visit a cemetery that I like more and I’ve seen quite a lot throughout my travels.

I’m quite sure that you were stressed with everything that happened on the airport, but at least you were all safe. It’s nice that you still managed to focus on the positive side! 😀

    Your photos are lovely =)

    you are such a trouper!

My parents’ luggage was also lost the very first time they came to visit from Italy to New York – and we managed just fine for a couple of days – but I didn’t have a wedding dress in their luggage!

wow, the days leading to your wedding were certainly exciting 🙂

Haha yes exciting is one word you could use… 😉

I have never, eeek I’m SO nervous to say this, had my luggage lost before in all of my travels!!! I was so angry with AA. My parents had a 3 hour layover, it shouldn’t have been lost. Thankfully, it was found, but what stress it caused! They are lucky that I was overcome with joy that my Mom had made it, otherwise I would have demanded free tickets for the rest of my life.

Ugh! I have had the same thing happen to me twice at Ezeiza in terms of being told the flight was landing at terminal A but then it came in at B. It caused so much confusion and wasted time. I’m so glad your mom found the courage to get on that plane and that the luggage eventually arrived.

This happened to me like 5X on this trip ahhhhhh!!! I don’t understand how the heck they can do that? But well, at the end of the day the only thing I cared about was having my family there.

Impressive how you can always focus on the positive. What a great place to take your family when they first arrived. I find cemeteries to be relaxing, beautiful places to visit.

I get that from my Dad, drives a lot of people crazy haha, but I feel like it’s a waste of energy to focus on the negative. They loved the cemetery, so I’m glad that I took them there first! It definitely took their mind off of the wedding stress.

The picture of the angel up on that dome is just stunning!

And even though I already know this story, I still feel like I’m in suspense for what happens next, hahaha! I’m such a nerd!

Thanks for taking us along your wedding journey, Andi! 🙂

I hope I can get to Argentina on my South America leg of RTW. I’ve been dreaming about it since following your blog. Why not? Visa. I will see if I can get it in London or other major cities before arriving. 😀

I have rarely been more nervous to get on a plane than I was while waiting at the airport before your wedding. After everyone else losing luggage and having flights canceled, I was so worried that we were going to have the same bad luck – not so much worried for us but worried that it would push you over the edge after a week full of problems!

If your flight had been canceled I would have officially lost it. Seriously, one of the things I remember the most about my wedding week is you running and hugging me at Faena at like 2AM during the Bachelorette Party! And then of course our little ladies chat from 3-5AM (?) with that crazy Porteno by the pool of Faena. Oh and you saying out loud that you were disappointed with the movie 2012 with JC sitting just feet away. In case you didn’t already know, I LOVE YOU!!!
