Turks And Caicos: Day 1

May 30, 2013

A new country, a new milestone — my husband and I could hardly believe that we were about to land in the Turks and Caicos to celebrate our second anniversary.  If the view from the plane was any indication of how gorgeous this island nation is, we were most certainly about to experience a trip of a lifetime!

Only a fifteen minute taxi ride away from the airport was our home in Providenciales for the next five days: The Somerset on Grace Bay.  On our ride to the property we joked about how never in our wildest dreams did we think we could come close to surpassing the extraordinary experiences of our first anniversary trip to Puerto Rico and Dominica.  It was a nice reminder to always expect the unexpected.

Waiting for us in our gorgeous one bedroom villa was a surprise bottle of my favorite champagne.

However, we were so excited to explore the grounds, that we continued to let it chill on ice, while we donned our bathing suits and headed straight back out the door that we had just walked through.

Immediately, we were faced with our most challenging decision of the day: pool or beach?  We elected to spend the remaining hours of sunlight by the pool and the following day would be spent entirely at the beach.

Complementing picturesque Grace Bay Beach perfectly are the resort’s two inviting pools.  One is a reverse-current lap pool, which at 138 feet is the longest in the country and features an underwater sound system and a shallow children’s area.  The second is closer to the ocean and is a zero-edge infinity pool.  A collection of comfortable lounge chairs and umbrellas are available to enjoy while taking in the glorious view of the surroundings.  The Somerset’s pools are made from imported Spanish glass tiles that absorb sunlight during the day and emit a soft glow underneath the moonlight.  It is the only property in the entire Caribbean with these unique tiles that are truly a sight to behold!

We celebrated our first evening of the trip in the resort’s gourmet restaurant O’Soleil, where we dined al fresco on the patio soothed by the gentle sound of sea breezes and rustling palm trees.  The menu highlights fresh, local cuisine that is Caribbean inspired and delivered with five-star service and an extensive wine list.  We both had a sensational homemade vegetable pasta dish and shared a delicious white chocolate cake for dessert.

We could not wait to go to sleep that night, as tomorrow was our anniversary and our special day offered the possibility of surprise, infinite wishes, and romance illuminated underneath a sunset.
