Joaquín’s First Birthday (Part 2)

January 15, 2016

People started asking me about what I was going to do for Joaquín’s first Birthday months after he was born! I was in shock. That and “when are you having your next?” Please do not ask a mom that latter question while she is still recovering from giving birth. Nevertheless, the last thing I wanted to think about was him turning one (in my mind he would always be my little newborn baby), so I decided we would not make a big deal on his first Birthday and instead make up for it on his second Birthday.

However, as the days got closer to January 5th, my husband and I’s desire to do something special grew intensely. We wanted to do a smash cake party with a theme that we had yet to see before and that would fit Joaquín’s personality perfectly. One day it hit me: baby James Bond. Lucas has always been obsessed with the 007 movies and Joaquín reminds us so much of James Bond: he is handsome, a ladies man, a charmer, a quick thinker, and loves to get into trouble! We could have gone overboard with the decorations, but decided to keep them as simple as possible.

If you are interested in seeing the family shoot we did before the smash cake party, you can view it here.

Who would have thought that our 001 would be more interested in playing with his grandparents piano than smashing some delicious cake? Turns out Joaquín hates cake and honestly at first I was a bit heartbroken, that is until I realized that if he did not want the cake, then that meant there was lots of cake for me and Lucas later to indulge in!

We thought we would try one more time with giving Joaquín his smash cake; this time putting him in his high chair with it right in front of him. I will let you decide with the next two photos on whether or not he was happy about this decision.

You live and you learn with motherhood. My son hates cake — big deal! Instead of being sad that I did not get the Pinterest worthy pictures that I wanted, I grabbed Joaquín and Lucas and headed to the nearest park where we had the best time with a soccer ball and his Christmas present. That is exactly how I will remember his first Birthday. Plus, no matter if he was crying or not in his tuxedo, he is still the cutest baby in this world to me!

I love it! My guess for the theme was Great Gatsby since you guys were all dressed up, but I didn’t feel confident since you didn’t look particularly 20s. James Bond completely makes sense, and I love the 001 idea!
