Atlanta, Georgia: Day 1

July 26, 2017

A couple of months ago, my husband and I had the urge to get away with our son for the weekend. We had recently visited the mountains and the beach on separate trips, thus we were looking for a cityscape. Atlanta, Georgia immediately popped into our heads as a possibility, since it is only a three hour car ride away from our hometown and has the big city feel that we were craving. We found an amazing house on AirBnB that I highly recommend, as it was luxurious and in the center of the city for an unbeatable price.

Our first day was spent at the Georgia Aquarium, which just so happens to be my favorite aquarium in the entire world! One of the best experiences of my life to date was diving with the whale sharks in this very aquarium years ago. I keep promising my husband that we will return together to snorkel with them and one day we will, but on this trip our focus was doing things that would make Joaquín happy. I think the best way to go into a trip with a toddler is to accept the fact that you will not be able to do everything you want to do and that was definitely the case at the aquarium. Nonetheless, we still had a magical time even though we only saw half the exhibits.

There is just no way to describe the joy I feel watching Joaquín be filled with intense curiosity from discovering something for the first time. I know I talk about this all of the time, but it never gets old for me. We frequently visit a local aquarium at home, however he has never been to an aquarium this grand before. He had no idea where to look first!

Whenever the whale sharks would swim by Joaquín’s eyes widened up and he would exclaim, “Wow!” I can only imagine how massive these gentle giants must have appeared to him. They truly are some of the most beautiful creatures to exist.

Atlanta, Georgia

I wished we lived closer and could return to this extraordinary aquarium more frequently, but I know we will try to visit as often as we can, since it holds such a special place in our hearts. If you are thinking of visiting the Georgia Aquarium I highly recommend giving yourself an entire day to spend there.

On a side note, have you ever swam with whale sharks before? If so, let me know in the comments where, as I would love to experience them in the wild.
