Dos and Don’ts of Repainting

June 1, 2019

Getting your house repainted might seem like an easy job; but there are many things that can go wrong. You can avoid most of these by prior preparation. Here are a few dos and don’ts you need to keep in mind before going ahead with your repainting project:

Make the necessary preparations

Preparing your rooms before painting them is very important if you want them to look good. Make it a point to remove all the furniture out of the room or cover the pieces with drop cloths to avoid any damage. Window frames and edges need to be taped properly so that they remain free from brush marks.

If possible get your door removed so that you don’t get any paint on it. If not, you should make it a point to paint the door with the new color. Door handles and picture hooks should be removed to keep them free from paint.

All imperfections on your walls need to be fixed before getting them painted. You might want to replace cracked panels or use sand papers on rough spots, before the job starts. Make sure you use drop cloths under the ladders so that you don’t have to deal with the spills.

Understand the type of paint that you are dealing with

If you are using a paint that is incompatible with your existing paint, you will have to remove the old paint. For instance, you might want to use a primer if your walls have been colored using an oil-based paint. If you are not sure about the type of your existing paint, it is better to find out from an expert before you start your project.

Know what you need

You have to buy your supplies well in advance before starting your repainting project. Painting a section without a primer can make it look horrible within just a few weeks. Also, you will have to stock up with enough paint so that the second batch of paints that you use matches exactly with the previous color. Use a paint calculator to find out how much paint you might need to finish your repainting project. Also estimate the kind of time you need and stock up on cleaning agents. If you are hiring someone to get your house painted, get an estimate from the painting company with a time commitment that works for you. Malerstaubo is a good place to check out if you are looking for a cost-effective alternative.

Make sure you have the right tools for the job

Proper tools and safety equipment are things that are very crucial for a repainting job. Proper scaffolds need to be obtained for painting the exteriors of your home and the top of elevated ceilings. Use rollers and high rollers instead of standard paint brushes. Although slightly expensive, you can save up on a lot of time and efforts. You can even consider renting supplies if you find it too expensive to buy them.

Last but not the least; take your time to finish your job. You don’t want to make mistakes and end up with a shabby looking house for a couple of years from now.
