Tips for Creating the Best Home Gym

June 3, 2019

There is a reason why so many people work out these days. Some want to get in shape, others have talked to their doctors and discovered that exercise will help them stay healthy, and there are also those who work out for the sheer joy of it. It doesn’t matter what your motives are; there are many ways to be active during the day and many ways to work out effectively. While some choose to go to the gym with bags, people find it difficult to squeeze in gym time in their schedules, not to mention the fact that gym memberships can be pricey. Here’s how you can make your own:

Gym in the corner

If you live in a small house or a rented flat, you might think there is nothing you can do, and that expensive gym membership is your only option, but you’d be wrong. You can easily “build” a home gym even if you only have a single corner available to work with. You can use empty corners anywhere: in your living room, bedroom, or your home office even, as long as are willing to get creative and flexible. One thing’s for sure, and if you have the means and the available space, you should definitely place a large mirror there, so you can see yourself and make sure you’re working out the right way. What is more, the room will look twice as big as a result.

Gym in the attic

If you have an attic in your house, and you only use it for storage, you might be able to transform it into a cozy gym. First things first: you should clean it up and throw out anything you don’t use and need. If you don’t want to throw everything away, you can rent a storage space and place your things there, while you turn the attic into a small home gym. You should try installing a roof window to make sure you have enough natural light and get your hands on some quality equipment. If you don’t have enough space to get in six different pieces of equipment, remember those cross trainers, as well as treadmills for cardio, will do the trick, as these are quite versatile. Add a yoga mat, a Pilates ball, and a few weights, and you’ll be ready to go.

Gym in the garage

If you have a garage that you don’t use, you’re in luck, because it can easily be turned into a nice home gym. Keep in mind that there aren’t any windows, which means you will have to think about two things: the lighting and the flow of air, because you don’t want it to become too stuffy. When it’s warm enough, you will be able to solve both these problems simply by keeping the garage door opened, but you will have to have a different solution for colder months. Fluorescent lighting ceiling fixtures are a good choice because they are both convenient and affordable. You should also think about flooring options because you want it to be comfy, and working out on concrete isn’t always the best solution. Durable rubber flooring is perfect because it’s easy to maintain.

Gym in the basement

In order to transform your neglected basement into a clean and cozy home gym, you will have to put in a lot of effort. There is no need to empty the space entirely if you don’t want to, but you should try relocating most of your boxes and things to one part of the basement so that you have some empty space to work with. If you already have a window, you only need to think about the light. Just like the garage gym we talked about before, fluorescent ceiling fixtures are a good choice, because you will need a lot of light.

You don’t have to add another room to your house in order to make a good home gym because literally any free space you already have could be used. When you make an effort to “build” your own home gym from scratch, you will feel motivated to start your workout every day, and you will know just how capable and determined you are. All in all, even if the available space seems like too little at the moment, see it as an opportunity to test your strength and express your creativity.
