Tired Of Conventional Travel: Here Is How To Plan A Proper Escape

November 3, 2025

What do you think of, when you think of a vacation or holiday? Depending on the trips you have enjoyed in the past, this can vary greatly. Perhaps you visited Venice as a youth, or had grandparents that lived in the South of France. Perhaps those visits informed your tastes and interests whenever you think about booking a trip these days.

All of this is great! If you like a certain destination, and you prefer it, that is something you can enjoy time and time again. Some people even invest in Disney park timeshares so they can always have a guaranteed spot for their family each year. To another family, that limitation might seem ridiculous, but for another, it could be a perfect arrangement.

However, if you feel that your conventional travel plans are becoming limiting, and you just desire an escape more than anything else, in this post, we hope to refresh your outlook and inspire your approach to travel once again. Let us see how that might look in the following advice:

Go For Slow Slow, Or More Local Adventures

If you usually rush between major cities, slowing down and not trying to achieve the perfect schedule will completely change your perspective on travel. It is best to pick one small region or town and spend your whole vacation there should you wish for a focused change, as it allows you to unpack once and get comfortable in your temporary home. For example, if you find a favorite local cafe, relax into the best spot for an evening walk, or just go on a localised road trip in a given region, you have purpose but flexibility too.

This change in pace is great for making the trip feel truly restorative. You do not feel the pressure to tick off a list of famous sights or move around every other day. You are just absorbing the atmosphere. If you are hesitant about going too far off the grid, it is beneficial to try this in a lesser known area of a country you already love. This keeps things familiar but offers a fresh sense of adventure.

Travel Centered On A Hobby Or Skill

What is the first thing most people do when thinking about their travel plans? Well, picking a place gives context to everything else, so it is the baseline step most people focus on first. But if you want to break the mold, it is fun to choose an activity you want to learn or improve and build your trip around that. Let us consider some examples. Perhaps you have always wanted to take a week-long cooking class in Italy, or perhaps you want to learn sailing near the coast of Greece, because you have been reading into mythology lately and want to see landmarks in person. If the trip is built around a practical goal, the sense of accomplishment you get afterwards is a reward in itself, because it informs your general interest and does not solely feel like a box-ticking travel exercise.

Of course, you do not have to be that high-minded. Maybe you just want to go on the ultimate fishing road trip, driving near local rivers for the best trout and salmon. Remember, you get to decide, so focus on what you’re interested in lately, not what others tell you.

Seek Out Meaningful Purpose

Sometimes you just have to look away from yourself to find what truly matters in life. It is fulfilling to look into ethical volunteer opportunities, which often place you in locations you would not usually consider visiting. That might involve conservation work or helping with community projects, or heading over to impoverished countries to help build wells and other community infrastructure, which should give you a chance to feel connected to a place in a deeply personal way and feel like your time was well invested.

Do not worry, though, if you do not have time for extensive volunteering, you could plan your trip around supporting local, sustainable charities, perhaps on nature reserves or course, or volunteering for a lighthouse season as an attendant.

It Is Fine To Be Offline

We are all connected to our phones and devices almost constantly, and while it does have convenience, it is also constant noise can block out the unique sounds and sights of a new location. It is beneficial to choose a destination that practically forces you to disconnect, like a remote cabin in the mountains or a quiet island where the WiFi signal is weak at best.

Alternatively, focusing on an experience surrounding a given interest, like heading to the Black Bull Golf Course, can be a great way to get in nature, focus on a hobby or sport, and stop caring about your social feed.

With this advice, you are certain to refresh your travel outlook and have a great time doing so, perhaps even developing a love for exploration again.
