February 13, 2018

When it comes to car terminologies, you will be surprised to know that a great majority ofpeople are not informed about a car’s engine control unit. As a car owner, it is important for you to know all the essential parts of your car and their purposes. That said, this post is a good read for you, especially if you own a classy, luxurious and posh Mercedes model. Keep reading to understand the beauty and power of a functional Mercedes engine control unit of ECU like is commonly referred to.

First things first; the engine control unit (ECU) consists of powerful auto computers that are designed to monitor the amount of fuel in the engine, for ignitions and anything else that concerns a car engine. Therefore, whether you have a Mercedes or any other model of car, the ECU is an important mechanism that monitors your engine. This basically means that you should have a handy ECU regardless of the car that you drive. However, for this post, we are primarily looking at the ECU of a Mercedes car model.

Now that you know the purpose of a Mercedes ECU, here is how to tell that your ECU is faulty and needs to be replaced or repaired.

  • When the engine won’t start – Cars just won’t start for no reason. So, if your car fails to start, then you could be dealing with a faulty ECU. However, before concluding that the problem is with the ECU, inspect your battery, check the starter and all the electrical components in your car. If everything seems okay, then you should consult your local mechanic because chances are that your ECU is not working.
  • When the check engine light comes on–When the check engine light in your Mercedes comes on and doesn’t go off, chances are that something is wrong with your engine control unit. Although there are other reasons that may trigger the check engine light like a lose gas cap, the most common reason is a faulty ECU. As soon as you notice this, take your Mercedes in for service and request for an ECU inspection immediately.
  • When performance on the road is poor –One of the main reasons why people go for the Mercedes models is because they are known for the most powerful performance on road. So, if you notice that your car is not performing as well or that the engine power is failing by the day, then your ECU might be faulty.
  • Baffling drops in the amount of fuel –A sudden and unexplained drop of fuel is a sign that your ECU is failing. Although experts say that cold weather does have an effect on the fuel economy in your car, it is best that you seek a mechanic’s expertise. Have your ECU checked for any issues before speculating that your fuel drop was caused by the dropping temperatures.

As a final point, it is mandatory for you to check the state of your ECU from time to time as it is clear that your ECU is what controls most activities in your engine.
