Having a baby means making a lot of decisions about things you will never have previously given a second thought to. Once you find out you are expecting a baby, you can feel a lot of pressure on you to get it right, however, there generally is not a ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answer. Much comes down to personal preference and what works for you and your family, here are some examples:
Reusable Or Disposable Nappies?
As with anything, there are both pros and cons to using disposable or reusable nappies. Disposables are convenient, once they are used you throw them away and simply grab out another one. On the downside, they can be expensive and they are bad for the environment due to the plastic they contain. With reusable nappies on the other hand, you only need to buy the initial nappies and they can be used again and again for as long as they fit your baby. However, they are less practical as they involve doing more washing, and are less convenient especially when you are out and about as unlike disposables you cannot just throw them away. Many parents find that a combination of both work well, reusable at home and disposable when they are on the go.
Where Will They Sleep?
One essential your new baby will need is somewhere to sleep. Will you go with a cot, a next to me crib, a moses basket or something else? There are a few options, so do your research, make sure what you have picked is safe according to the lullaby trust as some products on the market are known to increase the risk of SIDS. This includes things like sleep nests and positioners.
How Will They Feed?
Breastfeeding vs bottle feeding is always a topic that comes up when you have a baby, and many people feel strongly either way. The truth is, there is absolutely no ‘correct’ answer here, it all comes down to your preferences. As with anything you will want to do your research and be informed as possible, but as long as your baby is fed that is the most important thing. If you decide to bottle feed you will need to decide on a type or brand, it could be anything from German baby formula to the top selling brand in your country. Decide if you will buy a prep machine, and do not forget to purchase a sterilizer, so that the bottles you use are clean and safe.
Will You Have Any Visitors?
We are in the middle of a pandemic which is worrying for any parent to be. Depending on the lockdown rules where you are, visitors may be able to visit your baby according to guidelines, but it is down to you whether you will allow that. Weigh up the pros and cons, maybe you will allow one or two close family members, but others will have to wait? You might choose to not let anyone visit your baby until the situation with coronavirus becomes clearer. Either way, it is something to think about.
