5 Things to Do in Brisbane When You Need a Mood Boost

June 13, 2025

I just got back from a month trip that I can only describe as a city-sized hug for the soul. Let’s be real, sometimes life gets a little… grey. The routine sets in, the days blur together, and you find yourself needing a genuine, spirit-lifting reset. For me, that reset was Brisbane. I’d always heard it was sunny and laid-back, but I discovered it’s so much more than that. It’s a city that pulses with vibrant energy but also holds these incredibly peaceful, quiet corners where you can just breathe.

It’s not about rushing from one tourist spot to another. It’s about finding those little moments of joy that piece your mood back together. Whether you’re a local in a funk or a traveler looking for more than just sightseeing, Brisbane has this amazing ability to offer exactly what you need. From hidden city gems to the simple pleasure of sunshine on your skin, here are the five things that completely turned my mood around and left me feeling refreshed, inspired, and genuinely happy.

1. Discover Brisbane’s Hidden Gems for a Quiet Escape

Sometimes the best way to clear your head is to get a little lost on purpose. Brisbane is perfect for this. Beyond the main streets and bustling squares, there are these secret spots that feel like they’re waiting just for you. They’re perfect for a solo walk, a moment of quiet reflection, or for when you just need to see the world from a different angle.

My first discovery was the Old Windmill Tower on Wickham Terrace. It’s Brisbane’s oldest surviving building, and you can feel the history as you stand before it. Tucked away on a hill overlooking the city, it’s a quiet sentinel from another time. I spent a good twenty minutes just sitting on a nearby bench, looking at this piece of the past against the modern skyline. It was incredibly grounding and reminded me that there’s a quiet strength in endurance.

Then, I found what felt like a real-life secret garden. Within the sprawling, beautiful Roma Street Parklands, there’s a secluded area that isn’t always on the main trail maps. I stumbled into the Secret Garden and my jaw dropped. It’s a lush, subtropical haven with ferns, a misty waterfall, and winding paths that make you feel like you’ve entered another world. The air is cooler, the city noise fades away, and it’s just you and the gentle sound of water and birdsong. It’s the ultimate place to disconnect from your phone and reconnect with yourself.

For a dose of urban tranquility, the Teneriffe Riverside Boardwalk was a game-changer. This area, with its historic woolstores-turned-chic-apartments, has a unique industrial-cool vibe. The boardwalk itself stretches along the river, offering stunning views of the city and the Story Bridge. I loved going for a walk here in the late afternoon. The gentle lapping of the river, the cool breeze, and the sight of the CityCat ferries gliding by was so calming. It’s a beautiful blend of nature and city architecture.

If you’re craving a bit of creative energy, Fish Lane in South Brisbane is a must. It’s less of a single spot and more of an experience. This narrow laneway is a living art gallery, with incredible street art and murals covering almost every wall. I spent an entire morning wandering down the lane, discovering new pieces around every corner. Tucked between the art are some of Brisbane’s coolest cafés and bars. Grabbing a coffee and just sitting, soaking in the creative atmosphere, gave me such an inspiring jolt of energy.

I also drove up to the Mount Gravatt Lookout. While Mount Coot-tha gets a lot of the attention, this lookout offers a stunning, less-crowded 360-degree view of the city, stretching all the way to the coast. Seeing the world laid out before you like that has a way of making your own worries feel a little smaller. It was the perfect spot to watch the sunset and feel a sense of awe.

2. Unwind at South Bank or the Beach

There’s a reason we flock to the water when we need to unwind. The combination of sun, sand, and the gentle rhythm of waves is a natural remedy for a tired mind. Brisbane, being the clever city it is, offers this in two distinct and wonderful ways.

First, there’s South Bank Parklands. I was fascinated by this concept—a sprawling, man-made beach and lagoon system right in the heart of the city, with the skyline as its backdrop. Streets Beach is a sandy, patrolled beach complete with palm trees, and it’s completely free to use. I loved the vibe here. It’s a melting pot of city life: families splashing in the shallows, students reading on the grass, and tourists soaking up the sun. I spent a whole afternoon just floating in the cool water, looking up at the skyscrapers. It’s such a unique, joyful experience. Beyond the beach, the parklands are full of lush gardens, walking paths, and free cultural attractions like the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), making it a place you can easily spend an entire day without spending a dollar.

When I was craving a more traditional coastal escape, I took a short drive north to the Redcliffe Peninsula. This felt like stepping into a classic, relaxed beach town. The peninsula has a string of lovely beaches, each with its own charm. Suttons Beach is beautifully calm and perfect for a gentle swim. Margate Beach has a long, two-kilometre timber boardwalk, which was perfect for a long, meditative walk along the water’s edge. My favourite, though, was Redcliffe Beach itself, with its iconic jetty stretching out into the bay. I grabbed some fish and chips from a local shop, sat on the sand, and watched the pelicans. The salty air, the sound of the seagulls, the sand between my toes—it was simple, pure, and exactly the kind of soul-soothing experience I needed.

3. Pamper Yourself at a Local Nail Salon

Sometimes, a mood boost isn’t about a grand adventure; it’s about a small, deliberate act of self-care. For me, nothing says “I’ve got this” quite like a fresh manicure. It’s a little detail that makes you feel polished, put-together, and confident. And in Brisbane, I found the absolute perfect place for this ritual.

I’d heard whispers about The Nail Bar in Western suburbs of Brisbane, and it lived up to every bit of the hype. From the moment I walked in, I knew this wasn’t just any nail salon. The vibe is immediately welcoming and chic, but in a friendly, unpretentious way. It felt less like a clinical appointment and more like catching up with a friend who happens to be incredibly talented at nail art.

What stood out to me first was their commitment to hygiene. In a post-pandemic world, this is a huge deal. Everything was immaculately clean, tools were properly sterilized, and you could just tell they take the health and safety of their clients seriously. This alone allowed me to relax completely, knowing I was in good hands.

The staff are the heart and soul of the place. They are not only professional and skilled but also genuinely warm and chatty. They listened to exactly what I wanted, offered brilliant suggestions, and made the whole experience feel like a true pampering session. We talked about travel, life in Brisbane, and the latest nail trends. It was this human connection that elevated it from a simple service to a memorable part of my trip.

And the nails themselves? Oh my goodness. They are true artists. I scrolled through their Instagram and was blown away by the intricate, trendy, and downright beautiful designs they create. Whether you want a classic, elegant look or a bold, custom piece of art on your fingertips, they can do it. I opted for a fun, colourful design that I’d been dreaming of, and they executed it flawlessly.

I walked out of The Nail Bar not just with ten tiny masterpieces on my hands, but with a noticeable spring in my step. For the rest of my trip, every time I glanced down at my nails, I smiled. It was a small, beautiful reminder to take time for myself. Self-care is essential, and this little luxury was a total mood booster.

4. Eat, Drink, and Explore in West End

If you want to feel the creative, bohemian heartbeat of Brisbane, you go to West End. This suburb is a vibrant, eclectic explosion of culture, art, and food. Just walking its streets is an instant pick-me-up. It’s the kind of place where you’ll find quirky vintage shops next to independent bookstores, and colourful street art on almost every corner. The energy is infectious, and it’s perfect for a day of aimless wandering.

West End is where Brisbane’s diversity truly shines, and nowhere is this more apparent than in its food scene. The air is filled with the scent of spices from around the world, from Vietnamese pho to Greek souvlaki to authentic Italian pasta. It’s a paradise for foodies and the perfect place for a spontaneous meal with friends or even a solo outing to soak it all in.

I was on a mission to taste as much as I could, and I found some absolute gems that I have to share. For a night when you want to feel a little bit special, Rich & Rare Restaurant is incredible. It’s a sophisticated steak and seafood place with an amazing atmosphere. For a truly authentic taste of Japan, IPPIN Japanese Dining was a revelation—so fresh, delicate, and beautifully presented.

I’m a huge fan of Mediterranean food, and West End delivered in spades. Pilloni Restaurant serves up soulful Sardinian food that feels like it’s been cooked with love in a rustic, Italian kitchen. For a more lively, celebratory feel, Yamas Greek & Drink is the spot. The atmosphere is buzzing, the share plates are delicious, and it feels like one big, happy party. And for that classic, comforting Greek taverna experience, Lefkas Taverna is a local institution that makes you feel like part of the family.

Exploring West End, trying new foods, and just immersing myself in its creative, multicultural buzz was one of the most inspiring parts of my trip. It reminded me how much joy there is to be found in new flavours and shared experiences.

5. Get Close to Nature and Wildlife

No matter how low I’m feeling, nature always has a way of lifting my spirit. And one of the best things about Brisbane is that you don’t have to go far to find it. The city is woven through with green spaces and opportunities to connect with the natural world.

My first stop, and an absolute non-negotiable, was the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. I mean, can you even go to Australia without cuddling a koala? This place is the world’s first and largest koala sanctuary, and it’s an incredible experience. Holding a sleepy, fluffy koala was every bit as heartwarming as I imagined. But it’s more than just koalas. I spent hours hand-feeding kangaroos and wallabies that roamed freely in a large reserve. There’s something so pure and joyful about interacting with these gentle creatures. I left with a full heart and a camera roll full of adorable animal selfies.

For breathtaking views, Mount Coot-tha is iconic. The drive up the mountain is beautiful in itself, winding through a lush eucalypt forest. From the Lookout, you get a sweeping panoramic view of the entire city, the river, and the distant islands of Moreton Bay. It’s spectacular at any time of day, but especially at sunrise or sunset. At the base of the mountain are the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, a 56-hectare subtropical wonderland. I lost myself for hours wandering through the different sections, from the serene Japanese Garden to the futuristic Tropical Display Dome. It’s a peaceful oasis that feels a world away from the city buzz.

Finally, you can’t talk about nature in Brisbane without talking about the Brisbane River. It’s the artery of the city, and experiencing it is essential. You don’t need an expensive tour; one of the best ways to see it is by hopping on a CityCat ferry. For the price of a bus ticket, you get a scenic cruise that takes you under bridges and past some of the city’s best sights. I loved sitting on the deck with the wind in my hair, just watching the city glide by from a different perspective. It’s a simple, affordable, and incredibly relaxing way to spend an hour or two.

I left Brisbane with a sunnier outlook and a suitcase full of happy memories. The city taught me that a mood boost can be found in a quiet moment by a historic windmill, in the taste of an amazing meal, in the confidence of a fresh manicure, or in the simple joy of feeding a kangaroo. Brisbane isn’t just a destination; it’s a feeling. It’s a vibrant, warm, and welcoming place that has a little piece of sunshine for everyone. I know I’ll be back the next time I need to find mine.
