There is nowhere else in the world quite like London. While it can be a fantastic place to visit, it can sometimes feel overwhelming and you may want to escape the city centre. It is worth knowing that there are dozens of beautiful places surrounding the capital that you can easily reach by train in less than an hour and these places are highly worth visiting.
Cambridge
Cambridge is one of the UK’s most prestige and historic cities. It is, of course, home to the world-famous Cambridge University and also an incredibly beautiful city quite unlike anywhere else with unique architecture and many attractions, such as the King’s College Chapel, Cambridge University Botanic Garden, Bridge of Sighs, and Market Square.
Brighton
It is possible to reach the coast in about an hour and Brighton is one of the UK’s best-loved cities, particularly during the warmer months of the year when you can relax on the beach. There is a relaxed, laid-back vibe here, which can be a refreshing change of pace from the capital which can be chaotic and stressful.
Welwyn Garden City
Found in the pretty county of Hertfordshire about 20 miles from Kings Cross, Welwyn Garden City was the second garden city in England and a town of outstnading natural beauty. The green spaces make for a relaxing trip and there are often fun events happening here which are worth checking out. It is also easy to get a train travelling from Finsbury Park to Welwyn Garden City, so it is easy to reach from the capital too.
St. Albans
If you do not want to stray too far from London then St. Albans is a good option as it is about 20 minutes on the train but quite different from the capital. Also in Hertfordshire, St. Albans has a stunning cathedral, ornamental lakes and remains of the ancient Roman wall once protecting the city.
Surrey
Located just southwest of London, Surrey is a beautiful county with some of England’s finest countryside, which can be enjoyed on rewarding walks. It also has a host of places to explore, each with their own personality. This includes places like Guildford, Woking, Farnham, and Wisley.
London is surrounded by superb places to visit with these being just a few good examples. These places are easy to reach from the capital in less than an hour and will give you a completely different experience to what you find in London.
