Why Sikkim will Gain Popularity among honeymoon couples in India in 2020/2021

October 17, 2020

Saint Augustine very beautifully expressed the importance of travelling when he said, “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.”

Sadly, all our travel dreams have been put to rest by the fear of getting infected by the novel Coronavirus. The social distancing norms strictly prohibit stepping out of our homes until absolutely necessary. In these highly uncertain circumstances, it has become difficult to predict when the situation will improve. But it goes without saying that until we have managed to flatten the curve, the luxury of travelling has been suspended.

When lockdowns lift in various states, quarantine-weary humankind would want to head out to experience a breath of fresh air. As the breath-taking hilly state of Sikkim opens its borders for travelers from October 2020, it’s prismatic alpine beauty puts it high on the must-visit list. Especially for those getting married in 2020 / 2021 and wanting to go for a honeymoon, it will be a highly desirable option.

Sikkim has always been a very popular choice amongst newlyweds wanting to experience some much needed peace in an exotic location after a busy wedding. The following dreamy and romantic places in Sikkim justify why it will gain popularity among honeymoon couples in India in post Covid times:

  • Tsomgo Lake:

The Tsomgo Lake in Sikkim is a favourite amongst honeymoon couples – and for a very good reason. This spectacular lake flanked by gorgeous snow-capped mountains offers views of a bright green carpet of towering forests. It is one of the highest lakes in India and its scenic beauty is sure to leave you spell-bound. It is best enjoyed as a trip with Gangtok Tourism so you can relaxedly explore the lake and the area surrounding it. Riding beautifully decorated yaks with your partner around the lake is one memory that you will definitely cherish forever.

  • Yumthang Valley:

Also known as the Sikkim Valley of Flowers, the Yumthang Valley is a paradise for couples because of its astounding views of the Himalayan mountains. The dense forests with diverse flora and fauna along with yaks grazing in the lush meadows make the visit a picturesque affair. The Valley of Flowers lies by the banks of the Teesta river amidst waterfalls and many hot springs. The valley is extraordinary in its natural beauty because of enchanting views of several exotic and rare Himalayan flowers.

  • Nathu La:

Considered as one of the best places in Gangtok, the Nathula Pass is one of the highest motorable roads in the world. The drive offers splendid views of Chumbi valley of Tibet while both sides of the path are covered in snow. The Nathula Pass is at an elevation of 4310m from the sea level and couples can spend an amazing time immersed in its quaint beauty. It is also popular amongst couples who are into trekking as the view from the top is remarkable. You can also shop for Tibetan souvenirs available at a cheap price at the Sherathang trade market.

  • Ravangla:

A visit to Sikkim is incomplete without Ravangla, a scenic town between the Maenam and Tendong Hills. Apart from providing breath-taking views of the Greater Himalayas, Ravangla is famous as the dwelling place of some of the most rare and endangered birds in the world. Couples planning their honeymoon trip in August/September must attend the colorful Pang Lhabsol festival to enjoy the cultural performances at the carnivals and indulge in authentic Sikkimese cuisine.

  • Gurudongmar Lake:

Perched at a height of 17,800ft, the Gurudongmar Lake is one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world! The crystal clear water of this lake reflects the surrounding mountains, providing a very surreal view. The lake is believed to have healing properties. It is frozen from November to May but a certain portion of it never freezes. The myth behind this is that it was blessed by Guru Padmasambhava. For couples visiting post May, the lake area provides a dreamlike view as this is the spring flowering season. Although you will need a special permit to visit the lake area, it is definitely worth the effort.

  • Zuluk:

Located at a stunning height of 10,000 ft near the Indo-Tibet border, this little hamlet is one of the least explored destinations in Sikkim. Since Zuluk is a relatively new tourist spot and not highly populated by tourists, it is a very compelling option for couples Honeymoon Packages.  When you stay in Zuluk, you will be waking up to panoramic views of Mt. Kanchenjunga and the Eastern Himalayan mountain range.

  • Rumtek Monastery:

A Tibetan-style monastery, the Rumtek Monastery is one of the largest and most significant monasteries in Sikkim. It stands on top of a hill overlooking the city of Gangtok and is known for its spiritual appeal. Couples can spend time in its peaceful ambiance while checking out some of the rarest Buddhist artworks and mural paintings. The monastery leads to the stunning Golden Stupa which contains the relics of the 16th Karmapa.

  • Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek:

If you are one of those couples who would prefer a little adventure on their honeymoon instead of a romantic getaway, the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is the perfect activity for you. Originating from Yuksom, this is a 11 day trek that you spend marveling at the charisma of the third highest peak in the world. You get to witness the startling view of the Rathong River while going up to the Paha Khola Bridge to be astounded by the high altitude waterfall.

  • Green Lake:

The Green Lake is a visual treat located at the base camp of Mt. Kanchenjunga on the Zemu Glacier. It gets its name because of its jade green color. To visit this lake, you need to trek upwards starting from Thangu village while passing through the magnificent Kanchenjunga National Park on the way. It is a highly peaceful walk through the untouched beauty of Sikkim.

With the above-mentioned information, you can start planning your Sikkim trip with your beloved immediately to be well prepared in advance. Make sure to pick the right activities and spots to get the most of your trip. It will give you something to look forward to and distract you from the current pandemic anxiety as well.
