Orthodox Christians used to believe that the left hand is not as sacred because it is not as clean and therefore wearing a ring on that hand could mean the relationship does not remain as clean and it is not a better choice.

Actually no, it is not any different for men and women both, it is pretty much the same. Men and women can both decide what they personally prefer and that is something on them. Men usually prefer to wear a simpler ring and women want a fancier one. It can be the other way around too!
What are the benefits of wearing on the left hand?
The majority of people use the right hand as their main hand and this clearly means that they do not use the left one for major things. This improves the chances of the ring being maintained for longer, if it is worn on the lesser used hand.
