The Ultimate Guide to Renovating Your Bathroom

September 3, 2021

It’s no secret that bathrooms are one of the most important areas to renovate in your home. It is a place where you will spend a lot of time and it needs to feel welcoming, clean and functional. There are many things we take for granted when we visit someone else’s bathroom; like how they choose their toiletries and towels, or what order they keep them in. This article will discuss all the steps you need to renovate your bathroom so that you can make sure your new space works for you!

Know your budget and what you want to get out of the renovation

First,  you need to decide on your budget. This will help you determine what materials to use and how much time it will take to complete the project. If money is not an issue, then go ahead and get that top of the line toilet or new vanity!

However, if cost is a factor you want to consider doing some of the work yourself with products you can buy at a hardware store and save some money.

Next, you want to figure out what your goal is for the renovation

If it’s purely cosmetic then great! Get that new vanity or light fixture that you have been eyeing up online.

However, if there are issues with the structure of the bathroom such as water damage from old leaking pipes, you have to consider hiring a professional so that you can get the job done right. Renovating your bathroom without proper expertise could lead to more damage and higher maintenance costs in the future!

Once you know what type of renovation project you want to do and how much money is available for it, then you are ready start.

Take measurements and make a plan for your new space

Once you have a plan and budget in place, the next step is to take measurements of your bathroom so that you can come up with an accurate layout.

After taking all the measurements record them on paper or a design software program if it’s easier for you. You may want to start by drawing out room as if it were empty and then add your fixtures and other things as you go. This way if there is an issue with the measurements later on it will be easier to spot and fix before doing any damage!

Next, determine what materials you want to use for each part of the renovation like tiles or flooring. You may even want to create a list of stores that carry all the products you need to complete your project.

Create a timeline: set deadlines, decide on tasks, and delegate jobs to family members or contractors if needed

Now that you have all the measurements and a plan, it’s time to create your timeline. You can do this by taking note of tasks in an agenda or even create one on your phone!

Once you know what needs to be done when write down deadlines for each task so that there are no surprises later on. If you are not very organized or you have a busy schedule, it may be helpful to hire someone else to help share the workload.

Next, make sure your plan is clear and includes everything that needs to get done before moving onto step four!

Hire professionals

This is an important step that should always be completed last because it can turn a good bathroom into an amazing space!

Make sure you hire professionals like plumbers and electricians etc. to do the job right as well as make sure they are licensed and insured for your protection.

Choose materials such as tiles, fixtures, paint color/type etc., according to taste and budget constraints

Toiletries Storage – Some people like things neat while others prefer them in baskets or boxes on the counter. Find a system that works well for you and your family to store everything from shampoo bottles, towels, cleansers etc.

Shower Curtains – Not only are shower curtains functional but they can also bring personality into the bathroom! You have so many options when it comes to what style of curtain to use whether it’s modern or rustic, textured or striped.

Lighting – Lighting is everywhere in the bathroom! It’s important to choose a lighting solution that works well with your style and décor but also provides enough light where you need it most, like over your sink for applying make-up or shaving etc.

Tile Patterns/Colors – When it comes to the style of tiles you use, there are so many options available! If your budget is limited go ahead and choose a neutral color that will match everything. However if money isn’t an issue then consider using multiple colors or choosing more expensive but unique tile patterns like marble etc.

Vanity/Sink – Bathrooms can be very functional but also be an amazing place to relax. So, consider what you use your vanity for and choose one that has ample storage or even a hidden cabinet underneath it! You can also add homey touches like plants to make the space feel more inviting.

Bathtub – Decide if you want an acrylic tub surround painted in the color of your choice or if you want to go with a more modern design like acrylic that has no paint.

Toilet – Choose water-saving upflush toilet that uses less than 1.3 gallons of water per flush. This fixture will help reduce your household’s water consumption and, by extension, your water bills.
