Comparing Dubai And Kampala Accommodation

September 3, 2026

Dubai is currently one of the leading holiday destinations in the world. It is one of those few places that almost everyone who desires to go to Africa either has a stopover or sometimes even a mini-holiday before continuing elsewhere. In their attempt to serve as the global flight capital, they have also built zoos to capture what can be found on the different continents.

However, today, I wish to talk about something that is rarely considered when people are talking about African holidays; that is Uganda safaris in particular. The Pearl of Africa stands out because of gorilla trekking. Some have chosen to embark on a gorilla trekking road trip in Uganda, while others have booked tailor-made safaris.

When we talk about safaris, besides the flights, there are four other major things involved. That is accommodation, transport, meals, and activity charges. Once you have these four sorted, you have a complete safari quote.

One of the illusions is people assuming that because Uganda is an African country, it must be so underdeveloped that with a few pennies, you can get yourself accommodation. This illusion usually comes from people who have been to Asia, especially Bali, Indonesia. With Africa considered by many foreigners as a desert or savanna with half-naked people, you cannot but expect services at a minimal budget.

However, that is not the case. There are quite a reasonable number of people who have traveled to Uganda and noticed at the end of their trips that they under-budgeted. This is so common among people who make quotes based on the rates in their home countries or former holiday destinations, and they forget that they will be traveling to a totally different part of the world.

In an attempt to remove the common confusion that comes with under budgeting more so during self-drive road trips in Uganda, we are sharing some light on accommodation in the part of the country where you should expect to have the lowest rates, given that it is the capital of the country. Here are five hotels in Uganda compared with five hotels in the United Arab Emirates (UAE)

These five hotels either share names or can offer you a similar service to what a hotel in Dubai can offer. The rate difference is enormous; however, this should not lead you to think that all hotels in Kampala charge the same, but it should inform you about what to expect with your accommodation budget during your Uganda safari.

Comparing accommodation costs in Kampala and Dubai can help travelers plan a realistic budget for a Uganda safari.

Golden Tulip Dubai Vs Golden Tulip Kampala

These are two hotels under the same hotel group. You should expect a closely similar service level; unfortunately, the rates are not the same. The Golden Tulip in Dubai charges $50 per night for its four-star service, while the Golden Tulip in Kampala charges $260 per night.

In short, the money you would spend for five days at Golden Tulip in Dubai can only cover one night at Golden Tulip Kampala. Without this information, you would assume that doubling the double rate would be good enough to match the Ugandan rate until you reach Kampala and notice that things are quite expensive on that side of the world.

Four Point By Sheraton Dubai Vs Four Point By Sheraton Kampala

Sheraton is one of the biggest hotel names in Kampala. It is hard to mention the top five hotels in Kampala without mentioning Sheraton; however, do not be fooled by the fact that this is a franchise and simply assume that the rates for Four Points Dubai will closely match the rates of Four Points Kampala.

In Dubai, Four Points by Sheraton is at a similar rate to Golden Tulip. $50 can cover your night at this franchise hotel chain. However, in Kampala, you will do well planning for $210 to $220 a night. In short, four nights at Four Points by Sheraton Dubai will only get you one night in Kampala

Hilton Garden Inn Deira Dubai VS Hilton Garden Inn Kampala

Hilton Garden Inn Kampala is one of those places that have a nice name but are not considered prestigious in Uganda. It is not very spacious. But the service is good; compared to the Dubai counterpart, the difference in price is quite remarkable. In Dubai, you can book a night for $40, while in Kampala, you will need a minimum of $145 a night.

When you compare the price gap, it is not as bad as that of Golden Tulip and Four Points by Sheraton. At least, a night in Kampala covers three nights in Dubai, not four nights.

Marriott Hotel Al Jaddaf Dubai vs Marriott Kampala

I would have said Protea Hotel by Marriott; however, there is another Marriott that opened in Kampala in late August 2026. Since we are comparing prices, we shall still use a bracket rate to capture and compare. Marriott Kampala ranges between $165 and $200 a night, with an apartment option.

On the other side of the world in Dubai, Marriott Hotel Al Jaddaf ranges between $80 and $90 a night. Though this is the most expensive of the hotels we have so far listed in Dubai, it has the closest rate to the Ugandan version. By merely doubling your Dubai rate, you can afford a night at Marriott Kampala.

Sofitel Dubai Jumeirah Beach Vs Serena Hotel Kampala

This is a bonus rating. The two hotels are not connected or managed under a similar group, but the services can be closely matched. At Serena Hotel Kampala (not a beach hotel), you could have to spend $215 a night, while in Dubai, you would have to spend around $160 a night. This is the closest in terms of service that we could match.

However, we have been talking about hotels that you can find in Kampala. If you are getting such a service in Kampala at those rates, then you should expect something crazier when you leave the capital. Your budget of $250 a night is likely to get you something between a 2.5-star service and a 3-star service in most cases.

If you are comfortable sleeping in the wilderness, maybe considering rooftop tent camping would work out better for you. It is possible to get good service, including a car, fuel, meals, entrances, transport, and camping, for $200 per day. Alternatively, you can budget $50 to $100 for accommodation only, but expect a 2.5-star service.

It’s interesting to see how Dubai positions itself as a stopover for travelers heading to Africa. The idea of a mini-holiday there before continuing on is something many might overlook!

The role of Dubai as a stopover for many travelers heading to Africa is an interesting angle. It’s fascinating how accommodations in both cities can cater to such diverse experiences.

It’s interesting to see how Dubai has positioned itself as a major hub for travelers, even those heading to Africa. I wonder how the accommodation options in Kampala compare to those in Dubai for tourists.
