It takes time, sometimes years, to cultivate your own style. Being comfortable in your own skin and feeling at ease in your clothing is not something that comes naturally to everyone. For most of us, it is something we need to work at. As you are developing this, it is useful to have some key, versatile pieces to fall back on. These are items that can be used in several different outfits and for different occasions.
These classic sleeveless jackets or vests are not just for outdoorsy types. Vests are making quite the stylish splash right now. They are functional and easy to wear, providing an extra layer of warmth when needed. But they are also a bit of a fashion accessory in their own right. In recent years they have made their way out of the outdoor pursuits catalog and into the mainstream. And they do not look out of place in the office or for easy weekend wear.
Scarves are a great accessory, because they can be worn in so many different ways. And they always look so stylish and polished. They are no longer consigned outerwear and have become part of our everyday wardrobe. Learn the various ways to style them and choose a few different scarves in different colors and patterns. The knotted necklace style is ideal with a jeans and blazer combo for a casual look. While the French knot works well for the office. And of course, large scarves also double as shawls.
One of our favorite items, the blazer, is a great closet staple. It looks equally at home with a pair of jeans and sneakers or as part of your office ensemble. For even more options, introduce a belt, scarf, or brooch.
Pencil skirts always bring to mind Joan Holloway from Mad Men. But they need not be consigned to the office. When teamed with a pair or ankle boots and a leather jacket, they make a great weekend outfit. Or, you could stick to the classic pencil skirt and killer heels combo.
The great thing about a trench coat is that it can be worn all year long. The look you choose to cultivate, depends on what you wear it with. It will look great open and flowing over a pair of jeans. Or wear it belted, with a scarf, over your work suit. Choose a neutral color to suit several different outfit combinations.
Cardigans are great, because they have so many uses. You can pull them on to take the chill off or they can be part of your outfit. There are many different ways to wear them:
- Open or buttoned down (and you can change the buttons to change the look)
- As part of a twin set combo
- Embellished with a brooch
- Around your shoulders
- In place of a jacket in the spring and summer
Some notable exceptions we have not mentioned are the ubiquitous little black dress and black pants. But we all know about those right? What interchangeable staples do you keep in your closet?
