Running a business is not an easy task. Raising a family is not an easy task either. However, the following five women show that you can do both. Here are five amazing moms turned entrepreneurs who can hopefully inspire you to turn your ideas into actual money-makers:
-
Bita Doagoo
Bita Daogoo is a mother and co-founder of Detox Market (Canada), an online marketplace that offers products with clean and eco-friendly ingredients.
When her son was 15 months old, she opened The Detox Market. After putting her son at daycare for three days, he started biting. This is when she started to bring her son with her to work. She then realized that being an entrepreneur and a mother does not have to be compartmentalized into separate things. She started to feel parts of herself integrating and appreciated being a mother even more. She and her business partner opened a pop-up shop in King Street, Toronto and since then they have created five more pop-ups with two permanent storefronts.
-
Laura Thomas
Laura Thomas is a mom, photographer, and founder of Pretty Presets. Laura saw that many photographers shared a similar annoying experience wherein editing photos takes a lot of time. She remedied this with Pretty Presets, which provided pre-alterations for Lightroom, allowing people to save time editing their photos.
After having a few failed businesses, she was starting to feel burnt out and wishing she had more time for her family. She found inspiration through her kids and started her current business on a generic blogger website almost in one night. She continued to persevere and learned countless things along the way.
-
Jai Nam “Mommy” Choi
Mom, grandma, and owner of Mommy Sauce, Jai Nam Choi was born and raised in Myeongdong, Seoul, Korea in a family of eleven children. She spent a lot of her time in the kitchen, always munching on something with her siblings. When she moved to America and met her husband, his food tastes were completely different from hers. She then learned to make food that blended the two different styles of Korean and American cooking. She and her husband were working hard seven days a week, but every night, they looked forward to family meals at home. Food became such a big part of their lives and she makes it a point it to work harder and develop her special sauces even more.
-
Rana Longworth
Rana Longworth is the founder of Mom N’ Tot Box, a monthly subscription box for mothers and toddlers up to the age of four with items that come exclusively from small businesses. As a stay-at-home mom of two toddler boys, she wanted to work after her youngest turned one, but did not want the traditional nine to five job. She always enjoyed helping small businesses and saw that she always bought things from small online and local shops. That is where the idea of Mom N’ Tot Box was born. Through it, she is able to support mall business and deliver wonderful items to her customers.
-
Elle Rowley
Elle Rowley is a mom and founder of Solly Baby, a brand of versatile baby wraps that uses the finest fabrics with a remarkable stretch. Elle had a toddler, a newborn, and a husband in school full-time when Solly Baby began. Motherhood gave her the fire to go after what she wanted, not only for herself but to show her kids what is possible.
Through these amazing women, hopefully you can find the inspiration and courage to do what you have always wanted. Whether it be to create an online shop like many of them have or erect a brick-and-mortar one, it is important that you do not give up and that you believe in yourself!
