Sport Fishing In Kauai: 4 Tips For Beginners

February 17, 2020

If you have never been sports fishing, the idea of trying it for the first time can be rather overwhelming. With that said, it can be a lot of fun if you are thoroughly prepared for the experience. Here are 4 tips that will help those who are new to this arena feel like seasoned pros.

1. Hire A Fishing Charter

When it comes to sport fishing in Kauai, this is not something that should be attempted by those who are unfamiliar with the waters. The best course of action would be to seek out a local fishing charter that offers sportfishing tours for amateurs. By selecting a company that has a great deal of experience with beginners, it is likely you will be working with people who will be patient with you and try their best to help you understand the process every step of the way.

2. Bring Sunscreen

You will be out on the water exposed to the elements and it is not the responsibility of the charter company to make sure that you are protected from the sun. Even if you are someone who doesn’t generally burn, you should still be prepared and bring along some sunscreen anyway. The reality is that there is no harm in wearing this, even when it is not needed. In other words, it is far better to be safe than to be sorry. Hawaii is the first state to ban the sale of harmful coral sun blocks. Be sure to choose a reef safe sunscreen.

3. Ginger Is Your Friend

If you have never been out on a boat before, there is a huge chance that you will become seasick after being on the water for a while. Just in case this turns out to be the case, it is best to be prepared. The best thing for an upset stomach caused by the motion of the sea is to consume ginger. It is your decision whether you want to bring along a piece of ginger root to chew on or a beverage that contains this ingredient. This will help immensely if you are out there and you need to calm your belly enough to continue enjoying your trip.

4. Show Your Appreciation

When going out on a charter, you should know that it is customary for everyone on the boat to divide what they got with everyone else. If you happen to catch far more than everyone else, you should understand that your catch will be combined with everything that is caught for the day and split equally amongst the passengers and the owners of the boat. In addition, you should tip the captain and crew of the boat in order to thank them for their time and hospitality.

Also, try the table tennis game on vacations and holidays.

Being new to sport fishing does not mean that you must prepare yourself for a not-so-great experience. If you are an amateur and you want to have a time that is just as fun as those who are more experienced, the key is to follow all this advice. It will ensure that you have a great time when you are out on the water.
