Five Best Things In Atlantic City, New Jersey

September 26, 2020

Hotels.com asked me to share my favorite things to do and see while traveling in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Atlantic City has always been one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States and for good reason. The resort city makes for a fantastic vacation spot, since it has everything for everyone: beaches, casinos, malls, restaurants, and more! Although, it is most known for its casinos, you do not have to be gambler to thoroughly enjoy your time there, as the historical city is full of interesting sights and culture. When it comes to accommodation in Atlantic City, you will find everything from budget friendly to extreme luxury and everything in between. If you are thinking that you want to head up north, the following are the five best things for you and your family to experience while there:

Atlantic City Boardwalk

You cannot visit Atlantic City without taking a walk down the iconic four-mile long Boardwalk. It is lined with bars, restaurants, shops, and carnival-style games with a gorgeous view of the Atlantic Ocean. The Boardwalk connects many of the hotels and casinos, making it convenient to get from place to place. It is family-friendly and the perfect place to spend an hour or even an entire day. Make sure to look for a souvenir to bring home from your trip while you are there.

Absecon Lighthouse

Built in 1857, the Absecon lighthouse is New Jersey’s tallest lighthouse, standing 171 feet tall. In 1999, it went under a complete restoration, and since then it is now open to the public. Visitors can climb the lighthouse’s 228 steps and enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view from the top. It is conveniently located just a few blocks from the Boardwalk and operates daily July and August, and five days a week during the rest of the year. Entrance to the lighthouse museum is free, however, if you would like to climb to the top, be prepared to pay a small fee.

Atlantic City Beach

If you are not visiting Atlantic City to gamble, then chances are you are coming for the beach. Travelers are always impressed with the cleanliness and with how much room there is to spread out on the beach. The sand is extremely soft as well. The Atlantic Ocean’s waves are good for body boarding, boogie boarding, and wave jumping for children, while adults can enjoy surfing, walking along the flat terrain, and relaxing in a beach chair. On-site facilities include showers and changing rooms, plus lifeguards are on duty during the summer from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Unlike many other New Jersey beaches, Atlantic City’s are free to access.

Tanger Outlets: The Walk

Another great spot for shopping in Atlantic City is the Tanger Outlets. With over a hundred stores, there are many options to choose from at this open-air outlet mall. My suggestion is to stop and enjoy an ice cream while you are there and people watch. It is also a great place to head to at night, as it has live entertainment, bars, and nightclubs.

The Steel Pier

If you still have some energy leftover, then you must head to the Steel Pier for some unforgettable fun. This 1,000-foot-long amusement park is connected to the Boardwalk and there you will find rides for any age. There are plenty of options for food and drink. If you truly want the best view of the coastline and you are up for an adventure, you can embark on a helicopter ride right from the Steel Pier.

Please keep in mind that traveling in this moment remains uncertain, thus always make sure your safety and the safety of others is your #1 priority. If you are indeed comfortable with traveling, ensure you travel responsibly and within regulation. You travel at your own risk.

Here are some recommendations should you travel:

  • Wear a face mask.
  • Bring hand sanitizer and wash your hands on a regular basis.
  • Check official websites before your trip for the latest updates on policies, closures, and status of local businesses. Be aware you might have to self-quarantine upon arrival.
  • Book a hotel with free cancellation in case you need to change your plans at the last minute.
  • Be patient and calm. Remember we are all trying to do our best and are in this together.

Atlantic City is truly an iconic destination. Whether you want to spend your time catching some waves, playing slots, or shopping till you drop, it all can be done there. The vibrant atmosphere of Atlantic City will certainly keep you coming back!
