The Different Types of Bluestone Pavers Explained

July 1, 2021

Besides being beautiful and classy, there are many benefits that come with installing blue stone pavers Sydney. In this article, you are going to learn about the basic types of blue stone pavers as well as some of the benefits you should consider.

There are multiple types of Bluestone pavers you can always choose from. The typical four types of bluestone pavers are discerned by two main factors; two choices for colors and two choices for finished texture. Check out some of the best options at your disposal;

Natural Cleft Bluestone

Just like the name suggests, natural cleft describes bluestone that is cleft into layers. This means that you can always find cracks in the stone and can split it into slabs. These slabs are what are cut into rectangles to create the natural cleft bluestone pavers.

Because the slabs naturally split, the pavers usually have some irregularities. The surface of the pavers also have pumps and a rough texture, and the stones vary in thickness. They also tend to come with an array of colors including gray, purple, rusty orange, and blue. While the stones are less expensive, they are harder to install, thus labor intensive.

Thermal Bluestone

This type of bluestone is formed deeper from the quarries than natural clefts. Because of the weight and pressure they carry, thermal bluestones come with few fault lines and have to be sawn and cut into layers. Unlike natural cleft, this leaves a smooth, unnatural surface, which requires re-texture.

The process in which the stone is re-textured is called thermaling, hence its name. First, the stone is wet, and then it is heated with a hot flame to flake off the surface and expose the natural roughness. Because of this process, thermal bluestone is more expensive but also makes installation easier and less labor intensive.

Irregular Bluestone

If you have heard about flagstone then it means the same thing as irregular bluestone. They are also popular as stand-up bluestone. This is a natural cleft bluestone only that it has not been cut into shape (rectangle). They come in different shapes, sizes, and thickness.

To fit them together, they need to be cut and re-shaped. It is easier to create and achieve a range of joints and sizes according to preferences and the desired look. Because of this, it is harder to install and more labor-intensive. However, the cost of material is less expensive than most.

Why Bluestone Pavers

Here are some of the benefits of bluestone pavers;

Long-Lasting
