Top Six Gadgets Every Senior Should Have In Their Home

December 13, 2024

It is important that as you get older, you look after yourself as and where you are able and capable to. When we become seniors or reach that golden age in life, we often need a little bit more help, regardless of how independent we are. If you have elderly ones in your life who might need a little extra care here and there, it is useful to set them up with the best gadgets available.

Thankfully, as a society and generation living in this age, we have a plethora of technology at our fingertips. Here are six top gadgets every senior should have in their home.

  1. A smart speaker

A smart speaker is a great device for those who want to have a bit more ease when navigating daily life. For those who already own a smart speaker, we often forget what it was like before it came into our home.

Have you ever gone somewhere where a smart speaker was not there and asked ‘Alexa’ to do something by default? That is how much we’re reliant on these smart devices and why it is worth having them in a senior’s home.

These devices can be great for setting reminders, as memory can be one that falters as you get older. You can have the device assist with searching for information, helping them cook and play music. It is their very own personal assistance, which can prove very helpful around the home.

  1. Automatic fall detection systems and emergency buttons

We do not want to think about our loved ones taking a tumble but it can be something that happens as we all get older. Whether it is due to lack of mobility which makes reaction times slower to danger or clumsiness, a fall can be a disaster for those who are older.

Our bones and bodies in general become more fragile as we age, which leads to broken or sprained bones that can take longer to recover from. It is therefore worthwhile putting in preventative measures so the risk of falling is at a minimum. At the same time, it is useful to put in automatic fall detection solutions or an emergency button.

Either or both of these devices are extremely helpful to alert the medical emergency providers and yourself of a fall or accident where they need assistance quickly.

  1. Robot vacuums

Robot vacuums are something that can be handy when you are struggling to bend down or navigate the space with flexibility. Again, your body is not the same in its 60s or 70s, as it was when you were in your 20s or 30s. Therefore, anything that you can do to help reduce the effort needed in your home is beneficial.

For seniors, robot vacuums present several advantages. You are not needing to vacuum yourself, nor do you need to shift a heavy vacuum around the home to clean the floors. These robot vacuums can be scheduled to come out as and when needed to help clean up the floors throughout the day.

Then at the end of the day, your loved one will have clean floors, which helps minimize hazards as well as keep the home clean without needing to lift a finger.

  1. Doorbell cameras

Doorbell cameras are a great solution for those who want to add some security to their home, especially for those who are in their senior years. Likely to be alone or at least more vulnerable, doorbell cameras are the extra layer of protection and security that is helpful to have.

It gives your senior loved ones peace of mind, as well as providing peace of mind for you that they are at least a little more protected.

These cameras are relatively inexpensive to buy and easy to set up. You could also pair it to your smartphone to keep an eye on your loved one’s property and who is coming to the door.

  1. Automatic appliances

Automatic appliances are something to look out for when shopping for household appliances with your older loved ones. There are plenty of automatic appliances that are worth considering for the purpose of efficiency around the home.

Automatic locks for doors so that they do not need to worry about turning a key, to airfryers and other kitchen goods that do not require a lot of lifting or watching over.

  1. Pill dispensers

Finally, you should look at getting the very basic gadget for your loved one, which is a pill dispenser. This is important to ensure your loved ones are taking their pills as and when required.
