You have stepped into your bathroom for the first time. It is early in the morning, and you need to get ready for work or get the kids to school. You are on the clock, but you need to use the loo and take a shower to wake up!
But upon stepping inside the bathroom, you have found there is some random water puddles on the floor. And upon further inspection, you find that this water is pooling because of a pipe that is sprung a leak, whether from the toilet, the shower, the bath, or the sink.
Disaster! You are slowly getting flooded out, you are super busy right now, and you do not want to come back to a home that is been totally water logged. But what are you supposed to do? Here are the next three steps to take.
Turn The Water Off ASAP
Leaks cannot keep leaking if the water has been turned off! The moment you know there is a leak in your bathroom, head down to where your mains water supply comes from and switch it off. This is likely to be under a counter top in the kitchen, or in the closet underneath the stairs.
As soon as it is turned off, you are going to be a lot safer! The flooding risk will stop immediately, and there is less chance of any bathroom electricals falling into a big water puddle and causing some very dangerous sparks.
Assess The Damage (And How To Clean Up)
The leak could have occurred for any number of reasons. Maybe you just finished up with a bathroom upgrade? Maybe the pipes have been clanking and rattling for a while, and now the leak has finally come out?
It is important to think about the potential causes, as isolating the reason for the leak is the next thing to do. There will not be any more water leaking out of the system, now that you have turned it off.
But you do need to find out what is going on, for both your own peace of mind and to provide the right details to the plumber you are about to hire for a quick fix.
If you can, you should also put some towels down right about now. You want to soak up any standing water, as it can pose both a slip risk AND a chance for bacterial growth.
Call For Backup!
You have turned off the water, you have assessed the damage, and now it is time to call in the right kind of backup. That means you need to get on the phone to a team of trusted local plumbers and get one round ASAP.
When a professional can take care of the issue, you do not have to worry about it yourself! You also do not have to worry about the leak breaking through again due to a DIY repair that was less than suitable!
When your bathroom springs a leak, try not to panic. Turn the water off, find out where it is coming from, and then call a plumber. You have got this!
