Why Your Outdoor Space Is Not Perfect (And What To Do About It)

December 22, 2025

If you are having trouble with your outdoor space, you are not alone. It is something that affects millions of homeowners every year. The good news, though, is that there are simple things you can do to improve the space; it just requires knowing what to do. Instead of searching all over the internet, we have condensed everything you need to know into this short blog.

Your outdoor space is cluttered and disorganized

If your outdoor space is cluttered and disorganized, it can leave you unwilling to use it when you have items piled up all over the place and no space to move around. You cannot enjoy the square footage you have.

The good news, though, is that you can easily fix this problem. Just hire a skip and then declutter everything. Remove everything you do not need, sell it, put it into the recycling, whatever you need to do. Once you have a clean slate, then you can move forward with your outdoor space plans.

You are not protected from the weather

Another issue with many outdoor spaces is that you are not protected from the weather. Every time it rains or the sun is beating down, it makes you less willing to use the space.

Fortunately, you can get around this by contacting awning companies. These can provide you with various options. Alternatively, you can use movable umbrellas or even pergolas depending on your latitude.

There are no defined zones

A lot of outdoor spaces also suffer from the fact that they don’t have any design defined zones. They don’t have any purpose, so they just exist without really integrating into your lifestyle.

To get around this, make sure that your outdoor spaces are genuinely functional. Add things like rugs, planters, and comfortable outdoor seating. Think about what’s going to make you want to spend more time outside so you can enjoy the fresh air.

Also, if you do anything like eating or entertaining, then you need the space to have some sort of flow and connect to your kitchen and cooking areas.

You have uncomfortable furniture

As mentioned, if you have uncomfortable furniture, then you are less likely to want to stay outside. Most people are still using cast iron or wooden seating which is not ideal, and they are arranging it around wobbly tables that move every time they try to eat something.

To get around this, make sure that you put everything on a flat surface, so that it does not wobble, and that you use outdoor cushions that are specifically rated for outdoor use. Then you can mix and match to add some personality to the space and perhaps even include some supported chairs.

You have poor lighting

Finally, consider the lighting in your outdoor space.

During the day, there is no problem, because the light is natural. But when it is dark or early in the morning, you might not be able to see what you are doing. This is not particularly annoying if you are trying to entertain guests late into the evening. Again, though, there is a simple fix: just add path lights for safety and ambient lighting around your seated area. If you need to add spotlights or recessed lighting, then do so.
