San Diego lives up to its nickname of ‘America’s finest city’ by providing a bit of everything: history, wildlife, beaches, sun, and even rollercoasters. In fact, there is so much to do in this cool Californian destination that many visitors do not know where to start. To help you get the most out of your San Diego vacation, here are seven activities that could be worth prioritizing.
Explore the museums at Balboa Park
Start with a stroll in this 1,200-acre cultural park. Here you will find lush gardens, stunning Spanish-Renaissance architecture and 17 fascinating museums to choose from. You probably will not have time to visit them all — two top choices include the San Diego Museum of Art for art lovers and the Fleet Science Center for fans of aircraft and space. All in all, Balboa Park is excellent for an educational day out.
Spot sea lions at La Jolla Cave
La Jolla Cave is a scenic spot where you can watch wild sea lions basking on the rocks. Make sure to bring your binoculars to get a good view and visit early to avoid crowds. The cove’s protected area is also a hotspot for snorkeling and there is also a great coastal walk trail here too for those feeling physically active.
Take a ferry to Coronado Island
From downtown San Diego, it is possible to hop on a 15 minute ferry to Coronado Island –– an idyllic escape with pristine beaches. You will also find the famous Hotel del Coronado on this island. This historic beachfront hotel was opened in 1888 and has previously hosted royalty and various celebrities.
Ride rollercoasters at Belmont Park
Thrillseekers of all ages should take a trip to Belmont Park in Mission Beach. It is a vintage amusement park with arcade games, mini-golf, laser tag and an old wooden rollercoaster. Entry is free, but rides require wristbands and tickets. Whether you decide to go on any of the rides or not, it is worth taking a wander around.
Experience the nightlife in the Gaslamp Quarter
The Gaslamp Quarter is where you’ll find some of San Diego’s top bars, clubs and restaurants. Enjoy premium spirits at San Diego Gaslamp karaoke cocktail bars, catch live music at rooftop lounges on K Street and dine in gourmet bistros along Fifth Avenue. Book a table in advance if you’re visiting on a weekend.
Go shopping in Seaport Village
If you want to buy some souvenirs, head to Seaport Village where there are over 50 unique shops to browse. Even if you are not in the mood for retail therapy, Seaport Village is worth visiting simply for the beautiful waterfront views. You will find free parking nearby, plus many of the shops are family-friendly and pet-friendly.
Watch the sunset from Sunset Cliffs
End your trip to San Diego by enjoying sunset views from Sunset Cliffs. There are hiking trails along the clifftops where you can watch the sun dip into the Pacific, while also marvelling at the rugged coastline and potentially spotting some wildlife in the waters below. Couples looking for another romantic sunset experience can also consider a San Diego evening cruise.
