There are certain nights as a mother that feel small on the surface, but stay with you long after they end.
Last night was one of those nights.
What started as a simple outing to a local library turned into something, so much more: laughter, connection, creativity, and watching my son completely come alive in a space that celebrated exactly who he is.
The Main Event
The event we attended — K-Pop Trivia: Concept Showdown (Part 3: Ex Machina) — was hosted by the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library at their South County Regional location.
Held from 6:00–7:00 PM, the event was part of a four-part series exploring different K-pop concepts, with this particular night focused on the futuristic and fantastical world of “Ex Machina.”
And what made it even more special? It was designed as a hybrid experience, meaning teens could participate both in person and virtually via Zoom — making it incredibly inclusive and accessible.
A Theme That Felt Like A Whole Universe
The theme for the evening explored K-pop’s most imaginative side — where storytelling meets technology and performances become entire worlds of their own.
From robots to vampires to futuristic storylines, the trivia questions went far beyond surface-level fandom. They invited the kids to think deeply about artistry, visuals, and narrative.
Groups like ENHYPEN, AESPA, BTS, BLACKPINK, and more were woven into the experience — each representing a different layer of this creative universe.
And you could feel it… This wasn’t just trivia. This was passion.
Watching Joaquín In His Element
There is something so powerful about watching your child in a space where they feel seen.
Joaquín was completely in his element: focused, excited, confident. The kind of confidence that does not come from being told you are good at something, but from feeling it.
And maybe that was my favorite part of the entire night?
Not the trivia.
Not the prizes (and trust me the prizes are cool).
But witnessing him light up.
More Than Just A Library
There is something so special about watching a space like the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library come alive — not just with books, but with music, laughter, and community.
It felt modern. Thoughtful. Alive.
Events like these are a reminder that libraries are no longer quiet, static places — they are evolving into vibrant hubs where kids can explore who they are in ways that feel exciting and meaningful.
And the fact that this was completely free? Even more incredible!
Why This Matters
In a world where so much of childhood happens behind screens, moments like this feel different.
They are real.
They are shared.
They matter.
And for teens especially, having a safe, creative space to connect over something they love is everything.
Final Thoughts
We walked in expecting a simple trivia night.
We left with something we will remember.
And that is the magic of community — when something small turns into something unforgettable.
Information about the next event: This is a hybrid program, which means that it will take place both in person and online. If you choose to come in person, head to Community Room A on the first floor, where free snacks and refreshments will be provided. The Zoom link will be emailed out prior to the event if you want to participate virtually. The website that is used is called Wayground, and you can join the game on your phone or a separate window on your computer.
If you still want to sign up and have not already, here is the link to the registration page for the next event, which is May 18th: https://cmlibrary.bibliocommons.com/events/69f12a672866a5b4884b74a5
