Why A Reliable Watch Is Still One Of My Favourite Travel Essentials

June 4, 2026

After visiting more than 70 countries, I have learned that phones die, Wi-Fi disappears, and airports become chaotic. A reliable watch is one of the few travel essentials that never lets me down.

They are the things that quietly make life easier.

A comfortable pair of shoes. A good power bank. A lightweight jacket that works in almost any weather. And surprisingly, a reliable watch.

In an age where most of us carry smartphones everywhere, it might seem strange to describe a watch as a travel essential. After all, our phones tell the time, provide directions, store boarding passes and help us stay connected wherever we are in the world.

Yet I have found that a good watch offers something different.

It is one of those small things that makes travel feel easier without demanding any attention. Whether I am navigating a busy airport, exploring a new city, or simply trying to keep track of time during a packed itinerary, I find myself glancing at my wrist far more often than reaching for my phone.

Over time, I have realised that the best travel watches are not necessarily the most expensive or the most complicated. They simply combine reliability, comfort and versatility in a way that fits naturally into everyday adventures.

What Makes A Good Travel Watch?

The ideal travel watch is not the same for everyone, but there are a few qualities that consistently stand out.

Durability

Travel is rarely as smooth as it looks on social media.

Suitcases get dropped. Backpacks get squeezed into overhead lockers. Long days often turn into longer ones when flights are delayed or plans change unexpectedly.

A travel watch should be able to handle that reality.

This is one reason why sport watches remain so popular with frequent travellers. They are designed to cope with daily wear rather than being reserved for special occasions.

Comfort

Comfort becomes surprisingly important once a watch is worn for twelve or fourteen hours at a time.

A watch might feel perfect during a short meeting at home, but travel often means early starts, long flights, sightseeing, dinners and late evenings all rolled into one day.

A comfortable strap and balanced case make a bigger difference than many people expect.

Versatility

One of the biggest challenges when packing is deciding what to leave behind.

Most travellers do not want to carry multiple watches for a single trip. The best travel watches are versatile enough to work in different situations, whether you are spending the afternoon exploring a coastal town or heading out for dinner later in the evening.

That flexibility helps keep luggage lighter and decisions simpler.

Why Sport Watches Often Make The Best Travel Companions

While there are countless styles to choose from, sport watches tend to perform particularly well during travel.

They offer durability without sacrificing style and usually provide enough water resistance and robustness to cope with whatever the day brings.

Take the Breitling Navitimer, for example.

Originally designed with aviation in mind, it remains one of the most recognisable luxury watches ever produced. Its distinctive dial and strong visual identity make it feel perfectly at home in airports and travel settings, while its versatility allows it to transition easily from casual daytime wear to evening occasions.

The same can be said for the OMEGA Seamaster.

Its reputation as a capable dive watch is well known, but what makes it such a strong travel option is its balance. It feels sporty enough for active days while remaining refined enough for smarter environments. For travellers who prefer to bring one watch rather than several, that versatility is difficult to ignore.

Then there is the Panerai Luminor.

Its larger case and bold design make it a very different proposition, yet many travellers appreciate exactly that. The clear dial, excellent legibility and robust construction create a watch that feels built for real-world use rather than careful storage.

Each watch approaches travel differently, but they all share the qualities that matter most: reliability, comfort and adaptability.

Why Pre-Owned Watches Make Sense For Travel

One thing that has surprised me in recent years is how many experienced collectors prefer travelling with pre-owned watches.

At first, that seemed counterintuitive.

Wouldn’t a brand-new watch be the better option?

The more I learned, the more sense it made.

A pre-owned watch often feels easier to wear because it already has a story. Small signs of wear become part of its character rather than something to worry about. Instead of obsessing over every minor mark, owners can focus on actually enjoying the watch.

The pre-owned market also opens the door to discontinued references and models that may no longer be available through traditional retail channels.

For many enthusiasts, that combination of character, value and choice makes the pre-owned route particularly appealing.

More Than Just A Way To Tell The Time

What I appreciate most about travelling with a watch is not its practicality.

It is the way it quietly becomes associated with experiences.

Years later, a particular watch can remind you of a favourite city, a family holiday, a special celebration or a trip that changed your perspective.

Photos capture moments.

Souvenirs capture places.

A watch often captures the feeling of the journey itself.

That may sound sentimental, but anyone who has worn the same watch through years of travel will probably understand exactly what I mean.

Final Thoughts

Travel essentials are personal.

What one person considers indispensable may never make it into someone else’s suitcase.

For me, however, a reliable watch continues to earn its place on every trip.

Not because it is complicated or expensive, but because it does its job exceptionally well. It keeps me organised, adapts to different situations and, over time, becomes part of the memories created along the way.

In a world increasingly dominated by screens, there is still something reassuring about a simple glance at the wrist and knowing exactly where you are, what time it is, and where the next adventure might take you.
