My Simple Guide To Beautiful Summer Skin

May 10, 2015

There is something magical about summer. The longer days, the golden sunlight, the feeling of warmth on your skin — it all invites us to slow down and enjoy life a little more. But summer can also be tough on our skin if we are not careful.

Between the heat, sun exposure, travel, and humidity, our skin needs a little extra love during these warmer months.

Over the years, I have learned that achieving beautiful summer skin is not about complicated routines or expensive products. Instead, it is about simple habits that nourish your body from the inside out.

This guide is the routine I return to every summer — simple, gentle, and designed to help your skin glow naturally.

This post was originally published in 2015 and has been updated with new skincare tips and routines that I currently love.

1. Hydration Is Everything

If there is one secret to glowing summer skin, it is hydration.

During the summer months, our bodies lose more water through heat and sweat, which can quickly leave skin looking dull or tired.

I always start my day with a large glass of water and try to drink consistently throughout the day. Adding fresh lemon, cucumber, or mint makes it feel extra refreshing and encourages you to drink more.

Hydrated skin is naturally brighter, smoother, and healthier looking — and no skincare product can replace proper hydration.

2. Never Skip Sunscreen

Sunscreen is the single most important thing you can do for your skin in the summer.

Even on cloudy days, harmful UV rays can damage your skin and accelerate signs of aging.

I recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and reapplying throughout the day if you are spending time outdoors. Hats, sunglasses, and light cover-ups are also wonderful ways to protect your skin while still enjoying the sunshine.

Protecting your skin today is the best gift you can give your future self. If you are going into the water, use a sunscreen designed for that and reapply it when you get out of the water. As a new parent, I know how important it is to remember not to use sunscreen for adults on your children. Your kids skin is will be much more sensitive. Look for sunscreens for children-only.

 3. Simplify Your Makeup

Summer is the perfect time to embrace a more natural look.

Heavy foundations and thick powders can feel uncomfortable in the heat and may clog pores. Instead, I prefer a lightweight tinted moisturizer or BB cream paired with a little concealer where needed.

Sometimes the most beautiful skin is simply skin that can breathe.

4. Gentle Exfoliation

Add a touch of mascara, lip balm, and maybe a hint of bronzer — and you have the perfect effortless summer glow.

Exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells and allows your natural glow to shine through. However, during the summer months it is important not to overdo it.

I like to exfoliate once or twice per week using a gentle scrub or chemical exfoliant that helps brighten the skin without causing irritation.

This keeps skin smooth and fresh while allowing moisturizers and serums to absorb more effectively.

5. Eat Foods That Nourish Your Skin

Beautiful skin begins from within.

Summer offers an abundance of delicious fruits and vegetables that support skin health — berries, watermelon, cucumbers, leafy greens, and citrus fruits are all packed with vitamins and antioxidants.

These foods help protect your skin from environmental stress while giving you that natural summer glow.

Think of your meals as skincare for your body.

6. Keep Your Routine Simple

One of the biggest lessons I have learned about skincare is that simpler is often better.

My summer skincare routine usually consists of:

• A gentle cleanser

• A lightweight moisturizer

• Sunscreen during the day

• A nourishing serum or cream at night

By focusing on the essentials, your skin can stay balanced and healthy without becoming overwhelmed by too many products.

7. Rest, Relax, And Enjoy Summer

Stress can show up on our skin just as easily as the sun.

Taking time to rest, laugh, travel, and enjoy the beauty of summer can do wonders not only for your spirit but also for your complexion.

Some of my favorite summer moments involve long walks, time by the water, fresh meals with family, and slowing down enough to truly enjoy the season.

When you feel good inside, it often shows on the outside.

Final Thoughts

Beautiful summer skin is not about perfection — it is about caring for yourself with simple, nourishing habits that allow your natural glow to shine.

Drink water, protect your skin from the sun, eat nourishing foods, and embrace a lighter routine.

Sometimes the most beautiful version of your skin is simply the one that feels healthy, balanced, and loved.
