How to prepare children for the first day of school

April 4, 2020

The first day of school is an important milestone for children. They will face a new setting, a brand new environment. They will meet other people and make friends with people of their age. When exposed to this new kind of experience, children can have different reactions. For some, they are ready to step into a brand new world. For others, it can be very intimidating and scary. Parents also experience anxiety when the time comes for the kids to go to the school for the first time.

You may already have an idea of how your children will react to the first day of schooling. With that said, there are ways to prepare them to face this brand new challenge. And the good thing is, you have lots of time to get them ready for school. Here are some things you can do as a parent.

Visit The Room and The School First-hand

Before the first day, it’s best to visit the school and the classroom where your children will be studying. Most schools invite parents and their kids to check their school grounds before the start of the school term. Doing so has many advantages, not only for the kids but for the parents as well.

For the children, they will be able to familiarise with the new environment easier. They will know how to get around the school. As for the parents, it’s a good opportunity to discuss everything about the school, including areas like the classroom, lunch area, and bathrooms.

Discuss Everything With Your Child

As previously mentioned, children will have different opinions and reactions to schooling. As a parent, it’s important to understand what your kids are thinking and feeling. Ask your kids about their opinion about the school. It’s also important to know what their expectations are when it comes to the teachers, friends, and the new activities that they will do. Some children are also anxious about separation. It’s important to help them and reassure them. Reassure that that school will be fun. Tell them the advantages of going to class.

Practice Makes Consistency

Before school starts, it’s best if the children already understand what they will be doing. It includes not only what they will be learning, but also the daily things that they’ll be doing. For instance, you may want to practice waking up early, dressing up, and being ready for class. You can also practice their social skills by acting out possible situations at school. By doing so, they will be ready to face their new environment. If the child’s school recommend school uniform like boys suits, the parents will do well to test on the child before the school day. This would include things like the boy’s shoes or the girl’s shoes.

Instil Important Values

When your children go to school, you will have less time to spend with them. You won’t have as much time to guide and observe them as before. Although many parents are familiar with the challenges that their kids can face, it’s very difficult to see the extent of these situations. For this reason, it’s important to teach important life values that they can use, such as honesty, loyalty, and kindness. These valuable life lessons will be their guide when faced with decisions. Even if they are not with you, you can be sure that they will do the right thing.

Be Supportive of Your Children

Always show your support for your kids. Bring them along when shopping for school supplies. Give them some liberty when it comes to the things that they want to get for school. When the school starts, show your kids how supportive you are. Reassure them that you are confident that they can get through the day. Doing this can give your children a boost of confidence. You can also show your support by giving them their favourite snack to school.
