Gary Saitowitz examines how COVID-19 is changing the way we live, work and use technology

June 13, 2020

As countries struggle to cope with the coronavirus pandemic, the deadly strain of the virus has impacted everyone and compelled us to adapt to new ways of living and working by maintaining the new norms of hygiene and social distance.  Life will never be the same again, even when the pandemic subsides because new measures of control will change our approach to life and work. People are already practicing widespread use of the virtual platforms of video conferencing to stay connected and work from home. Although some companies had been practicing these methods before COVID-19, working from home is now the norm. According to Gary Saitowitz, there has been a significant push to make and use more and more mobile apps to support new work habits and lifestyles.

Gary Saitowitz looks upon WFH as the new norm

In an effort to maintain business continuity, most businesses have asked their employees to Work from Home (WFH). Consequently, WFH has become a trend that is popular across the world.  Although this method of working does not suit all kinds of business operations, most white-collared employees can implement it depending on the type of roles they play in their companies. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 29% of Americans adapt to work from home effectively as compared to the averages in the years 2017 and 2018. Millions of office workers, including IT professionals, accountants, marketers, salespersons, administrative staff and many more, can work remotely with complete ease get more at uses of computer.

Virtual concerts

Currently, people are staying confined at homes either in quarantine or to maintain the norms of social distancing. As such, the world of entertainment and music has taken to the virtual realm as well. Many musicians and artists are participating in quarantine concerts from their homes and connecting with the world with music through the internet. Performers can get creative and use social media platforms like Instagram Live to perform and interact live with fans by overcoming the physical barriers set up to combat coronavirus. On April 18th, the international advocacy group Global Citizen collaborated with Lady Gaga for the One World: Together at Home concert, a virtual event that people like John Legend, Billie Eilish, Andrea Bocelli, Lizzo and others participated in.

Virtual classrooms

With the education sector under total lockdown due to the coronavirus epidemic and little signs about its chances of reopening sometime soon, online teaching and virtual learning have become the new norm. E-learning has become the mainstay of students and teachers alike, and what used to be the choice of a selected few is now set to become mainstream.  The pandemic that we are going through has paved the way for testing the usefulness of virtual classrooms as a tool for learning during troubled times. The lesser-used virtual mode of communication and learning is now turning out to be the savior for millions of students and educational institutions as they try to retain some momentum of the academic and teaching activities which generally remains in full swing during this time of the year.

Distance learning has been an integral part of the learning system for a while, but it has only recently become widely accepted. The coronavirus pandemic has now put it to test to prove its effectiveness in replacing classroom teaching.
