Northern English Delights

March 18, 2021

When visiting England, most people immediately think of London. While London is an iconic city, England has much more to offer than just its famous capital. Let us take a stroll through some of England’s Northern wonders to offer alternative city-break ideas for those wishing to discover quintessential England.

York

York is one of England’s most ancient cities and a true gem of the north. It is a beautiful, charming medieval treasure, steeped in history and offering a quaint, old-English authenticity. With its Roman walls, Viking ruins, and Gothic cathedral, the deep history of York represents the history of England. Stroll through the cobbled, medieval streets of The Shambles, and you will be captivated by the centuries-old sweet shops. York also has more than 365 pubs which are full of character. The Golden Fleece is said to be the most haunted pub in York and marks the start of the famous ghost walk.

Leeds

Leeds, also known as the ‘London of the North’, is a shopper’s paradise. With a mix of modernity and tradition, you can shop in style at one of the charming old arcades. The city is famous for its vibrant bar and restaurant scene, which is ever evolving and has something for everyone. Among its eclectic mix of pleasures is the impressive Napoleons Casino, one of the UK’s top casinos, where you can enjoy an exciting evening out in luxurious surroundings. If this is your cup of tea, you can browse the latest odds and offers for the UK’s leading casinos using trusted websites such as oddschecker, all from the comfort of your home.

Whitby

If you fancy a trip to the English seaside, Whitby is an idyllic seaside town with tons of character and a beautiful coastline. Built into the harbour, this charming little town slopes sleepily down towards its picturesque port. Being an active fishing port, Whitby offers some of the best fish and chips in the country, with fish often being served within hours of being caught. Adding to the town’s uniqueness, Whitby is the goth capital of Britain and has historic links to Dracula, making for a distinctive and spooky experience.

Liverpool

For all the culture and music lovers out there, Liverpool is a must. A city of creativity, culture, and quirkiness, Liverpool will inspire you at every corner. This city is well known for its friendly atmosphere and its famous connection to The Beatles. You can visit the world’s largest Beatles exhibition ‘The Beatles Story’ at Albert Dock or visit the Cavern Club where the band famously played during the 1960s. Beyond its musical roots, Liverpool has a unique system of docks which are visually spectacular and iconic in Britain’s global trade history.

Beyond these brilliant cities, the north of England is abundant with beautiful countryside. The Lake District, Peak District and Yorkshire Dales are worth checking out if you are looking for a rural break in the breath-taking English countryside. Hopefully, you now have a taste for England’s Northern delights.
