Eight Things To Consider When Capturing Breathtaking Moments In Nature

April 29, 2021

Photography is a diverse field. There is so much to learn when it comes to taking a picture. It may sound simple to you, but the reality is the opposite.

Why do people hire professional photographers for certain occasions? Why are some photographers better than others? Needless to say, taking a picture is no less than an art.

In this article today, we are going to talk about landscape photograph. If you are into capturing nature, you are in for a treat. Following are a few things to consider when capturing breathtaking moments in nature:

Be Spontaneous

First and foremost, you need to understand that landscape photography is significantly different from shooting portraits. They say spontaneous shots are the best when it comes to landscape photography.

Therefore, you must be prepared at all times if you want to succeed in landscape photography. How? Well, it is simple. Keep your photography equipment close whenever moving around, from one location to another.

Invest In The Right Equipment

Yes, you can take a picture with your mobile camera whenever you see that pink sky, but do you know there is a huge difference in the image quality of a mobile camera and a professional camera?

Your mobile camera is not going to cut it if you want to be a professional landscape photographer. Hence, you must invest in the right photography equipment. It includes everything, from a camcorder to an action camera, as well as a tripod.

I was recently reading a blog post by Steve McCurry who happens to be my favorite photographer, and guess what? He recommends using a video camera for landscape photography. The reason being, photography is a lot more than just still shots. Thereby, I will suggest you check out the best 4K video cameras and get one at the earliest.

Know The Angles

If you want to improve your photography skills, you must practice with different angles. Sometimes you take a hundred pictures just to get that perfect one. Do you know why it happens? Because of the wrong camera angle.

That is right, guys! When capturing nature, you must know your equipment and the location inside out. There are times when the angle you choose is incorrect; hence, the lighting doesn’t cooperate. That is why capturing the site with the right angle is crucial in landscape images.

Use The Natural Light

Natural light is the best tool a photographer has. Have you ever seen Steve McCurry’s nature shots? I must say that he has a way with colors. He knows how to capture the right thing at the right moment.

Speaking of improving your landscape photography skills, you must become best friends with natural light. Once you understand how to play with the natural light, you will see a prominent improvement in your photography skills. I can give you my word on this!

Be Open With The Filters

Most photographers are afraid to use the filters because of the misconception that filters ruin the originality of the image. Well, excessive use of everything is terrible. If you use the filters excessively, it goes without saying that they are going to ruin the image quality.

On the other hand, using one or two filters will not hurt anyone. In fact, the right filter can actually enhance the colors of your image. For example, sometimes the foreground looks washed in landscape images because of the incorrect focus.

The question is, what can you do about it? Are you going to waste the picture? What if I tell you that it can be fixed using filters? Yes, you have heard that right. You can enhance the colors of your image using filters.

Do Not Skip The Foreground

One mistake that most photographers make is neglecting the power of capturing the foreground. Without a foreground, your image can be boring to some. Therefore, one smart trick to get the viewer’s attention is by capturing the foreground.

The idea behind it is quite clever. Every person has a different mindset, different likes, and dislikes. If there is an image of a lake in the middle of the hills, you may focus on the waves while I admire the hills or maybe the sky.

Capturing the foreground can add a sense of depth to your image. It is the best way to attract people to your image. Think about it this way, when you’re giving in to their demands, so why will they not like your work?

Be Patient

Patience is one personality trait that helps a lot in photography. Whether it is a wedding photoshoot, a fashion shoot, or landscape photography, patience is what a photographer needs to succeed.

Let us make peace with the fact that you are not going to get that perfect shot every time you click an image. Sometimes it takes hours to get one breathtaking image. I reckon that it can be frustrating for the photographer. It is time-consuming as well, but patience is the key here.

Furthermore, nature is unpredictable. The clouds will always change positions, the lights will come and go, wildlife animals will move as they please, so the more patient and dedicated you are, the better would be the result.

Practice, Practice, and Practice

It is an indisputable fact that practice makes a man perfect. If you want to succeed in landscape photography, start practicing today. Try different cameras, go to different places, play with the lights and filters, edit and remove, and LEARN.

You may fail once or twice. You may not get attractive shots for a while, but you will learn. You will learn every time you will make a mistake. Remember that practice never goes to waste. It is one thing that is eventually going to make you successful in the field of landscape photography.

The Final Word…

Landscape photography is not as complicated as it seems. All it needs is time and devotion. Follow the photography hacks mentioned above and I am confident you will become the best landscape photographer the world has ever seen. You just need to take a start from somewhere! I wish you all the best, my friends!
