How It Works
All that the user needs to do is place the hand in the area, and the scanner will be able to read the veins. This technology involving veins is already in use, but Hitachi has expanded on this. The position of the finger does not matter, it will be read, and if it is recognized, it will be able to pass through.
The days when there had to be a single finger used, and it had to be kept still, are long gone. A Hitachi spokesperson explained that the lighting was controlled in such a way that the finger was lit up regardless of the position or angle it was in. This allows for speed and prevents queues.
Why Are Veins So Important?
The new biometric technology is more secure than previous ones. Even though it is still the finger that is being used, there is a great difference between scanning a fingerprint and finger vein authentication. It is not just the ridges of the finger that are being checked, but the blood in the veins. This is a better system because:
- It is not possible to fake the veins as they are internal vessels.
- Fingerprints can alter over the years, but veins in the finger do not.
- There is no need to touch the scanner when viewing the veins.
The person being scanned must be alive and present. It may seem strange that this is an improvement, but it would be possible to scan a recently severed finger when prints only were needed.
