What To Focus On When Renovating Your Next Home

July 30, 2021

When it comes to your home, you always want to know that you are living in the best possible place. We all have dreams and goals, and you will probably find that there is a set end forever home that you have your mind on. But what happens when you feel like you’re getting closer to it? It might even be the case that you are ready to buy a home now and renovate it so that it’s ready to become your dream forever home. And this can be such an exciting process to be a part of. Even if you are buying a home that does not look the best to begin with, you could put your own touch on things and look to add value to it. This could then mean that you have your forever home without having to pay over the odds for it.

Say you are in the position to buy a new home or you are thinking about it, it is also a good idea to have the renovations you want to do in mind too. That way, you are already prepared in terms of what work you need to do and the budget too! So if you are read to give this some serious thought, here is what you might want to focus on next when you look to take on a remodel.

Extending

Firstly, you might want to think about extending the property. When you are renovating, you want to try and maximize on the property as much as you can. So think about the things that you can do to add more room. Whether you can get a double story extension on the back and side or just a single story out the back, see if you can feasibly work this in and get the permits signed off. This is your best bet at adding value and getting the dream home you want.

Adding A Garage

It might be the case that you like the idea of adding a garage as well. It can add value when you have somewhere to protect your vehicles and even with great storage space and maybe even an office upstairs or something like that. Just be sure to look into construction costs, specific garage door installation estimates, and also how you want the design to be too. This can give you a true idea of whether it is worth it.

Converting The Attic

The next thing to look at is the attic space. Do you need to convert this or can you get an extra bedroom or living space by doing this? Think about what you can do to maximize this unused space. It could even become an office or a movie room. Use your imagination here.

Converting The Basement

As a step on from that, look down. If you have basement space, can you convert that into something more usable too? It can make a great gym space or laundry room — or even storage space. Going down and really using up that space can allow you to add so much value and keep the home organized too — especially if you are using your attic as a living space.

Redoing The Driveway

From here, you might want to get practical and think about improving the driveway. Curb appeal is real. And it is always going to be important for your driveway to accentuate the house. So take a look at driveway designs and see what stands out the most to you. Think about how you want it to look and invest in this as you are working on the overall structure of the property.

Landscaping The Yard

Then you will want to think about how you plan on landscaping the yard too. Even though this will be the last thing that you do, it is a great idea to get some plans drawn up so that you know what this is likely to cost. Focus on what this will look like, what the dream is, then you can save up what you need so that it can be executed when the property is finished.

Repointing Or Rerendering

Another thing that you might like to do to the exterior is to take a look at the building itself. Does it need some improvement? It could be the case that you need to get it repointed or rerendered? If it is painted, then a new lick of paint might be needed to smarten it up too.

Adding A New Kitchen

Then of course, when you head back inside, one of the most exciting parts of renovating a home is the idea of adding in a new kitchen. We all love to spend a lot of time in this part of the home, so it is definitely a great idea to think about how you can bring the space alive with different kitchen trends. Really plan this out and think about what you want added in. That way, you can be sure to create your dream kitchen without scrimping at all.

Renovating The Bathrooms

Likewise, you will want to do the same with the bathrooms too. Take a look at what is already there and see what you need to replace. Depending on the number of bathrooms in the place, you might not want to actually replace all of them. Some of them you could spruce up, but it will be great for you to think about adding in a new master bath and family bathroom at least.

Sprucing Up The Rooms

Then we have the idea of sprucing up all of the rooms in general. This could be the case of replastering some of the walls, ripping out old flooring and getting them ready to design and fit for purpose.

Modernizing The Decor

And, of course, you are then going to want to update the décor. Choosing cute paint colors and wallpaper, bringing in new flooring, and having fun picking out new furniture is one of the best parts of the renovation.

Adding In Statement Touches

But then also, you are going to want to start thinking about the statement touches you can add in that will add value and really elevate the décor. When you are renovating, it is nice to add in wanted pieces, from a modern fireplace to LED lighting, glass bifolding doors and even a firepit in the yard. Really think about the focal points you can work with that will bring the whole place alive.

Starting Again From Scratch

Finally, it could be the case that you want to knock down the property altogether and start again. Maybe you want to change the whole blueprint of the house or you want to use up some more of the land? Think about the full cost of building a house and whether or not you could get the necessary licences to do it! This sometimes can be cheaper than you would think.

As you start to think about what you need to do to remodel, it will make the process feel much more realistic and achievable. Actually planning out the things you want to do and budgeting for them allows you to know what you might need to spend and how much value you can add to the property too. Not only that, but you could work out what you might want to spend over years of investing in your forever home.

All that is left to do now is get started. So work out what you want to do, when, and get the arrangements all put in place.
