Taking Care Of Your Pet’s Eyesight

December 6, 2021

As a pet owner, looking out for your pet’s health and wellbeing is one of the most important things that you can do. A healthy pet is a happy pet, after all! One aspect of a pet’s well being that can sometimes get ignored though is their eyesight. Despite this, the eyes can tell you a lot about your pet’s health, so it is important that they are well taken care of.

Things like natural and safe eye drops for dogs and cats can do wonders for helping your pet’s eyesight, but is there anything else that you can do? Thankfully, there is a lot that you can do to help your pet’s eyesight stay in good shape for a long time. Here is everything you need to know!

Keep An Eye Out For Problems

It is always a good idea to take a look at your pet’s eyes every once in a while. Check their eyes to see if there are any signs of problems. For instance, if you notice any redness, injury or swelling in the eyes then it could be a sign that there is a problem. Your dog or cat’s eyes should be wet, and look clear and bright. If anything looks amiss, you know your pet better than anyone — speak to your veterinarian for help. If you catch any problems early then you are less likely to get any serious problems later down the line.

Clean The Eyes

Dirt and nasty substances can get into your pet’s eyes fairly easily, but unlike people, pets are not able to get rid of things from their eyes since they have paws instead of hands. For that reason, they are going to need a little bit of extra help from you and you are going to have to clean their eyes. This is very easy to do as you just need to get a cotton ball that is slightly dampened with water and clean the corners of the eyes. Do not wipe in towards the eye since this can cause you to scratch the cornea, which is definitely not a good thing.

You can also use some eye drops in order to make your pet’s eyes clean. They are designed specifically for your pet too, so you know that they are safe. If you have any doubts then you can ask your veterinarian for recommendations.

Trim Their Hair

If your pet has long fur, then it is pretty likely that at some point it will get long enough to get into their eyes. Not only is this uncomfortable, but the hair around your dog or cat’s eyes can also damage the cornea. They may end up feeling itchy around the eye and they can become inflamed. This is sadly a common issue with dogs that have long hair. As such, it is a good idea to keep the hair in this area well trimmed. Get a pair of sharp scissors and carefully trim the hair in the eyes, making sure that your pet does not abruptly move their head since this can cause serious injury. If you do not feel confident enough doing it yourself, don’t be afraid to take your pet to a groomer.

Give Them Foods That Are Good For the Eyes

It is a good idea to ensure that you are feeding your pet a diet that is high in the nutrients that they need to support good eye health. You can prevent a lot of health problems by giving your pet the right diet, and that goes for eye problems too. Make sure that goods are containing good antioxidants that will support good vision. They should be getting plenty of vitamin A, C and E too. You will find most of these nutrients in high quality pet food. You can also supplement it with some healthy and yummy treats, such as broccoli, wild salmon and blueberries.

Take Them To The Vet

Your pet’s yearly checkups are not there for no reason, you know! They are very important for checking that all is well with your pet. Your pet should also be getting eye examinations on a regular basis. This will help to ensure that any issues are diagnosed early on. They can also give you treatments to use in case your pet has any issues so that they can be treated. It may cost a little bit of extra money, but it is definitely worth it to keep your pet healthy.

Conclusion

Keeping your pet’s eyes healthy is very important, and in many cases it is also simple to do. By following the tips listed above, your pet’s eyes will be in top notch condition to allow them to find squirrels and balls from miles away!
