Is An Adjustable Bed Right For You?

April 8, 2022

Did you know that the beds we sleep on can be a factor in whether we get a good night’s sleep or not?

Adjustable beds have been rising and becoming popular even outside hospitals in recent years. Based on recent statistics, there has been a 1.7% increase in the market growth of adjustable beds in 2022. Certainly, adjustable beds have provided the comfort that most consumers want to rest and sleep better.

The ability to adjust the angle of your bed can help alleviate a variety of issues, including back pain, acid reflux, and snoring. But is an adjustable bed right for you? That depends on your specific needs and preferences. When choosing an adjustable bed, it’s important to consider factors such as the range of motion, adjustability options, and additional features such as massage or remote control. By doing your research and trying out different models, you can find the best adjustable beds for your needs and enjoy a more comfortable, restful sleep.

Let us talk about the perks of having an adjustable bed to help you decide whether it’s the right bed for you.

What is an adjustable bed?

It is exactly what its name suggests: an adjustable bed is freely adjustable, and it contains features that you can raise or lower, depending on the sleep position you prefer. Adjustable beds typically come with a wireless remote you use to adjust, making it convenient and more comfortable. They allow ergonomic positioning, relaxing your body, and supporting its ideal posture.

Generally, adjustable beds are the norm in hospitals, but electric adjustable bed suppliers today have created innovative improvements to allow consumers to purchase and use them at home.

Advantages of an adjustable bed

Aside from providing convenience and comfort, adjustable beds have other advantages that are good for your health:

  • Better Circulation

If you are one of the many people who suffer from swollen legs and feet, an adjustable base can help alleviate some discomfort. Elevating your feet by adjusting your bed can reduce any swelling that occurs while sleeping at night, thus improving your blood circulation as well.

Adjustable beds let you choose a sleeping position that will allow your heart to pump blood better to the body parts that need it.

  • Reduce Back Pain

Back pain is a serious thing, and many adults suffer from it. When you have an adjustable bed, you can adjust it to a position that will alleviate the pain you’re feeling. For instance, you can adjust it to elevate your legs, relieving the pressure on your spine.

Adjustable beds can also support your spine’s natural curvature when you sleep, reducing any chance of back pain in the morning. Elevating your feet can also help distribute your weight equally, decreasing the strain on your back.

  • Reduce Sleep Apnea, Asthma, And Snoring

If you are suffering from snoring, asthma, or sleep apnea, your airways should be opened up from time to time when you sleep at night. Snoring occurs because your soft tissues and tongue constrict your airway, often when sleeping in a flat position.

With adjustable beds, you can elevate your head when you sleep, allowing you to breathe better and more comfortably. They can also help support drainages and keep your sinuses clear, especially when elevated.

  • Improve Digestion And Reduce Acid Reflux Symptoms

Adjustable beds give you the liberty to elevate your sleeping positions, improving any acid reflux symptoms and your overall digestion. Pregnant women will enjoy adjustable beds the most because acid reflux is common during pregnancy, especially during sleep.

Disadvantages of an adjustable bed

Naturally, adjustable beds also come with disadvantages you need to look out for before purchasing one:

  • Higher Price Range

These beds are generally more expensive than traditional and regular ones because of the adjustable feature. Additionally, not all mattresses are compatible with adjustable beds, and you may need to switch your frames too.

  • Increased Noise

Adjustable beds are designed with beams and joints to support your weight, often resulting in audible and noisy squeaks and frame noises. With this, they are generally noisier than the flat and regular beds. Additionally, some motors of adjustable beds do not have a quiet mode, so you might hear them when you are using your bed.

  • More Limited Movements

If you often toss and turn when you sleep, you may observe that movements are more restricted with adjustable beds. The inclines or declines of these bed types may make it difficult for you to shift from one position to another when sleeping.

Factors to consider

Aside from the pros and cons of adjustable beds, you must also consider these factors when deciding whether buying one is right for you:

  • Your Budget

As mentioned earlier, adjustable beds are more expensive than regular ones, so you must prepare your budget. Additionally, you might still need to buy a new bed frame and mattress that should be compatible with your new adjustable bed.

  • The Types Of Furniture

Before getting an adjustable bed, you must ensure that your current bed frame, headboard, and general furniture layout match it. You also need to check whether the operating mechanism and the bed’s dimensions match the space you have in your room.

  • Mattress Compatibility

Not all mattresses are compatible with adjustable beds. If your mattress is a regular innerspring one, you need to change it unless its manufacturer explicitly states that it can be used with adjustable beds.

When attempting to use incompatible mattresses for your adjustable beds, you may damage your mattress or hinder the bed from functioning normally. However, if your mattresses are made from memory foam or latex, they should work fine.

  • Spare Power Connection

These beds will only function when you plug them into a power outlet. Before getting one, make sure that your room has a spare power connection, or your bed will not work at all.

Adjustable beds for a good night’s sleep

Adjustable beds can change how you sleep, improving it and making it more comfortable to rest after a long day of work. Relieving back pain, improving digestion, and reducing snoring and sleep apnea are advantages you can get with adjustable beds. Ultimately, you must consider all the factors mentioned to get the maximum functionality of adjustable beds and get the most out of them.
