How Homeowners Should Deal With A Leaky Roof

February 1, 2023

A roof is a big investment that protects everything inside your home. Dealing with a leaky roof repair can be a nightmare that is best left to the professionals. A leaky roof repair may seem like a simple project but most often that is not the case. When homeowners attempt to repair a leaky roof on their own, most often they unintentionally make the problem worse. A leaky roof repair does not have to be a huge disruption if you know what steps to take.

Determining Whether There Is A Leak In Your Roof

Do not wait until you have water running down the walls before you call a roofing contractor. If your roof is 20 years old or you can see visible signs of wear and tear, then it may be time to call a professional. Finding old shingles in the yard that have blown off the roof is another sign that you may need a leaky roof repair. If you can see shingles curling around the edges or blowing up in strong winds, then you should probably call a professional.

Why Homeowners Should Not Attempt To Repair Their Leaky Roof

While we live in the do-it-yourself age, this is not always the best way to go when it comes to a leaky roof repair. First, there is the cost aspect. A roofing professional gets higher quality materials at a lower cost than you can find at the home improvement stores. An experienced certified roofer will also already have the necessary tools to do the job right the first time. No matter how great you are at doing things yourself, you will not be able to match the experience and skillset of a professional roofer.

Your roof is one of the biggest investments you will make, and it protects everything inside your home. A leaky roof repair is something you want completed correctly and as soon as possible. Besides, most homeowners are not experienced working up high and walking around on roofs. It is dangerous work and the injury you could potentially suffer is not worth trying to save a few bucks.

What To Do If You Have A Leaky Roof

There are certain steps you can take to minimize damage if you already have a leaky roof. If water is coming inside, then move items out of the way and try to contain the water. If it is safe to do so, consider putting a tarp over the area until a professional can get there to deal with your leaky roof repair. Above all, stay safe.

The other most important step is taking photos of the area. It sometimes helps to send photos to your roofing contractor but more importantly, you may need them for insurance purposes. Depending on the damage and the cost to correct it, you may decide to claim your leaky roof repair on your homeowner’s insurance. Photos are the proper documentation to protect yourself in this situation. If you are unable to take photos, then consider asking your roofing contractor to do so before making the repair.

Do Not Let A Leaky Roof Repair Turn Into A Nightmare

A leaky roof repair does not have to turn into a nightmare if you take the right steps. First, contain the situation, if necessary, by moving furniture and using a tarp. Second, take pictures if it is possible to safely do so. Above all, call a roofing professional to deal with your leaky roof repair and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing the job will be done right the first time.
