Trying to sleep on an unbearably hot night can feel like torture. You are sticky and too warm, and it can keep your mind awake too. Some people are well-practiced in staying as cool as possible when it is hot out, but not everyone has got it down to a science. If you are new to hotter summers or you have just never really managed to get it right, you might need a bit of extra help to make yourself comfortable on summer nights. So how do you stay cool when temperatures are high to prevent a terrible lack of sleep through the whole season?
Stick To A Good Sleep Routine
It is easy for your sleep routine to be affected when it starts to get hotter. There are several reasons your habits might change. You could find yourself waking up earlier as the sun streams into your bedroom. You might stay up later too because there are more daylight hours, and you can find yourself struggling to sleep, which might lead to napping in the day. But it’s important to try and keep up a consistent routine if you want to sleep well. Try to stick to your usual routine and do the things you would usually do before bed.
Switch Your Sheets
Switching the sheets on your bed is one of the simplest things you can do to sleep better. You obviously do not want too many layers or anything too thick, but trying to sleep with nothing over you at all can sometimes feel strange. Make sure you use breathable sheets that will allow air to flow. Thin cotton sheets will help to keep you cool and will absorb sweat too. Your body temperature will fall while you sleep (even when it is hot) and using sheets, however thin, will help prevent you feeling cold when you wake up.
Get Your AC Serviced
You might not like to have your air conditioning running all night. But even if you do not have the temperature too low while you sleep, it is still important for your AC to be efficient during the day. Pay attention to your seasonal HVAC maintenance schedule and have your AC serviced before summer truly arrives. If you can cool your home down during the day, a well-insulated home should stay cooler at night. You do not want your HVAC system to experience problems halfway through the summer, so get it checked as early as you can.
Time Your Windows
Should your windows be open or closed when it is hot outside? The answer can depend on the time of day, whether you are using air conditioning, and even the setup of your home. Opening the windows when it is cooler outside can definitely help you sleep, but you need to make sure you open them at the right time. Opening them too much during the day could just mean your home gets warmer. Use blinds and curtains to keep the sun out, and open your windows at night to let a breeze come through.
Create a cooler home during the summer and you can get a peaceful night’s sleep even when it is hot out.
