Hong Kong: NOBU InterContinental Hong Kong

July 13, 2012

A restaurant becomes a worldwide sensation for a reason, usually because the food is life-changingly good, and NOBU is no exception.  It is the most recognized Japanese restaurant thanks to Chef Nobuyuki “Nobu” Matsuhisa’s culinary masterpieces.  His one-of-a-kind cuisine is a combination of traditional Japanese dishes with South American ingredients  — the perfect symbiosis!  I have had the good fortune of dining at five of the twenty-two locations, although my new favorite is without a doubt the NOBU InterContinental Hong Kong.  It is my favorite because not only does it offer NOBU’s signature dishes using local ingredients, it also has, in my humble opinion, the best view in all of Hong Kong.

The restaurant was designed by the Rockwell Group and features an elegant and intimate setting with a breathtaking view of the Victoria Harbour.  There is a dining room, sushi bar, bar lounge, and a private dining room for special events.  According to the restaurant, “The design of NOBU InterContinental Hong Kong is inspired by Chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s innovative cooking and the imagery of the Japanese countryside where he grew up.  Key design elements include a unique undulating sea urchin ceiling and custom-made bamboo embedded terrazzo walls.  At the bar, a cascade of black river stones frames glistening imagery of Japanese cherry blossoms, which is a signature feature of the NOBU experience.”

This was my husband’s first time dining at NOBU’s and I was anxious that he might not enjoy the experience, since he does not eat seafood.  However, if this is any testament to just how excellent the restaurant truly is, our bill at the end of the night was the most expensive restaurant bill either of us have ever paid, and that is not because the restaurant is expensive, it is because we could not stop ordering dish after dish.

While we waited for our various meals to be prepared, we ordered cocktails and were mesmerized by the dazzling lights and the ships that continuously passed by us in the harbor.  We both agreed that Hong Kong is one of the most magnificent city’s in the world.

Green Tea Sake Martini

Dry Martini

NOBU Sashimi Tacos: Tuna, Salmon, Lobster, and Crab

Chilean Seabass with Dried Miso

Lobster Tempura with 2 Sauces

NOBU Style Fish and Chips

Black Cod Saikyo Yaki

Mochi Ice Cream

Bento Box: Warm Valrhona Chocolate Soufflé Cake and Green Tea Ice Cream

I left fully satiated and wondering in which city would my sixth NOBU experience be in?

He is now more open to trying it, but he still doesn’t like fish (other seafood yes). The desserts were incredible…especially the chocolate!!!

My husband doesn’t eat seafood either! What a coincidence! 🙂

They MUST open there since they use South American ingredients. I’ll just call Nobu up and talk with him. 😉 If we ever find ourselves together in a city that has a NOBU we are absolutely going!!!

Haha – we’ve cracked up some serious money at Nobu too, especially trying all the different sake! We were a five minute walk from the Melbourne location and used to go all the time. SO good though – I could eat plate after plate of black cod with miso….mmmmm

That restaurant managed to snag that place in downtown since they have actually been there forever.

Hong Kong is definitely a completely different experience when you have enough money to experience the luxury side of things. Having a private yacht to celebrate Chinese New Year fireworks at Victoria Harbor vs. sitting patiently for 4 hours on Ave of the Stars with 4 portable potties among 3000 people were two completely different experience.
