I recently read an amazing feature in Glitter Guide entitled, “A Few Of Our Favorite Mamas Get Real About Motherhood.” These fabulous mommy bloggers, whom have inspired me greatly, were interviewed and photographed wearing my favorite dress designer Rachel Pally! If I had been interviewed the same questions, here is what I would have said:
HOW HAS MOTHERHOOD MOST SIGNIFICANTLY CHANGED YOU?
Ultimately, motherhood has made me a better person, because everyone I encounter now is somebody else’s son or daughter. It has completely shifted my entire perspective on life and the legacy I want to leave for Joaquín. I am definitely nowhere near perfect, but I strive to be the best I can be for him.
WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF MOTHERHOOD FOR YOU?
Being able to truly love unconditionally.
AND THE MOST CHALLENGING?
That as much as I love to plan and organize, life is out of my control now and I just need to go with the flow. This feeling led to my postpartum anxiety and depression that I felt during the first year of Joaquín’s life. What really helped me was getting him on the Baby Wise schedule. I highly recommend the book. Also, sleep deprivation is not fun at all!
WHAT LESSONS HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR OWN MOTHER ABOUT PARENTING?
That as long as all of your actions come from a place of love, you cannot make a mistake. Whenever I feel overwhelmed I remind myself of this.
HAS BEING A MOTHER CHANGED YOUR STYLE?
100%. Before becoming a mother my appearance was extremely important to me. Now, not so much. It is not that I do not care what I look like or what I am wearing, it is simply not a priority. I hate wearing makeup when I am around my son, so that I can kiss him whenever I want. Most days I am lucky if I get a quick shower, thus I decided after he was born to cut about 10″ off my hair in order to save time. Do I have the haircut of my dreams? No way! However, I am gaining at least 30 minutes a day more with Joaquín, which is totally worth it. When we play I do not want any clothing restrictions, thus the latest fashions do not really work for me. I am sure as he gets older things will change, but I am happy to be in a stage where I do not care whatsoever how I look (except for when I am at work). It is an extremely liberating feeling.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WITH YOUR CHILD(REN)?
I will do just about anything to make Joaquín smile! Honestly, I love doing everything, as it is so much fun reliving life through him. Cuddling is my absolute favorite thing, but I also adore taking him to the park and our local aquarium.
3 WORDS THAT YOU USE TO DESCRIBE MOTHERHOOD
Life changing, rewarding, and exhausting.
WHAT ARE A FEW OF YOUR FAVORITE THINGS?
Travel, photography, learning languages, reading blogs, and most recently decorating our new house.
What a great article about motherhood. Being a mom is hard but amazing at the same time.
Thank you so much! I agree, challenging to the core, but 100% worth it!
