January 6, 2020

A bright smile is the most attractive trait of your personality and the poor dental hygiene ruins your beautiful smile. Well, proper maintenance of teeth requires regular visits to the dentist. However, the basic requirement of good dental hygiene is brushing your teeth twice a day. But brushing your teeth in the right way is more important to maintain a good condition of gums.

Brushing is something that you are doing for as long as you can remember. Is it not? However, brushing is something that you do every day, but never gave much thought to. Although, brushing is a very important part of the daily routine most of us still do not do it correctly. A very renowned Brisbane Smiles BNE dentist mentioned that brushing immediately after having some kind of acidic food can literally damage your oral health.

Brushing with a wrong technique can actually lead to serious oral problems due to which a lot of oral health therapists aim to educate patients when they go for their check-ups. Here are some biggest mistakes everyone makes while brushing at home:

  • Brushing with a wrong toothbrush

It has been the biggest myth that for effective cleaning, one should always get a medium or hard toothbrush, but it actually damages your teeth. Moreover, using the same brush consistently for so long can also lead to serious oral issues. As the average life of a toothbrush is about three months. The excess use of the brush makes the bristles lose their flexibility and once the bristles are frayed, they will not clean your mouth properly.

Furthermore, after a particular time period, the bristles start holding some food particles or germs which are going to affect your teeth very badly. Moreover, broken or bent bristles will not be able to get into the areas that need to be cleaned properly. So, you should change your toothbrush after every three to four months and try not to brush too hard.

  • Brushing too quickly or too many times

Dentists often recommend that you should brush your teeth twice a day, every day. But more often than this, can seriously erode your teeth enamel and damage your gums. And less than this will lead to poor oral health. It can lead to plaque and bacteria settled in between the teeth.

Likewise, as they say, ‘excess of everything is bad’ so brushing should also be done for a specific time interval. Studies have shown that you should brush for about 2-3 minutes is enough for good oral hygiene. However, most of us fall short of this duration every time while brushing. Dentists always recommend that you should spend at least 30-40 seconds on each section of your mouth.

This reliable dentist in Salem also adds that you should wait for at least 30 minutes after eating before brushing your teeth. Otherwise, you will be brushing your weakened enamel off your teeth.

  • Wrestling or brushing

The main reason for brushing your teeth is to remove plaque which is soft but sticky. So, rather than brushing hard to get you to mouth cleaner you should get a soft brush for yourself and brush your teeth in circles. Moreover, almost everyone thinks that scrubbing the teeth hard can help to get sparkling teeth and a healthy breathe but this hard scrubbing can actually wear away your teeth and hurt your gums. You should always brush gently with a soft toothbrush. You have to observe a balance in brushing which will help you to keep your oral health healthy.

  • The wrong technique

Brushing your teeth twice a day will not help you maintain good dental hygiene if you are brushing at a wrong angle or with the wrong technique. You should always hold your brush at 45 degrees to the gum line so that you can efficiently clean your mouth. The strokes while brushing should always be vertical rather than horizontal for superior cleaning. You should clean your teeth and gums with an up and down repeated motion and the strokes need to be short. You should try to clean the areas of the inner portion of your teeth to have a healthy.

Moreover, you can use electric brushes for superior cleaning of your mouth. The electric brush reduces your efforts as you just have to guide it and it will do the rest. These electric brushes can easily reach the hard-to-go areas of your mouth to clean your mouth properly.

  • Avoiding areas that bleed

You should never skip the cleaning of the areas that bleed while brushing. As, bacteria to gather near the gum line, the area where the teeth and the gums meet. You should always clean the area below the gum line carefully to get rid of the hidden plaque or bacteria. And the gum area is the most sensitive area of the mouth that starts bleeding as they can get inflamed.

Furthermore, if you are facing this bleeding problem then avoiding that area while brushing is not going to solve your issue. Despite avoiding bleeding, you should gently brush the area twice a day. This will surely help you to recover.

As they say, ‘good dental hygiene starts at home’. And brushing is the easiest remedy for almost every dental issue. Moreover, you should always rinse your mouth with a mouth wash twice a day and clean between teeth with a piece of floss daily. Most importantly, rather than brushing your teeth immediately after having a meal you should wait for at least 30 minutes to brush your teeth. Although, old habits die hard these were some things you need to correct yourself at.
