Six Easy Ways To Encourage Children To Be More Active

September 27, 2021

You might be surprised to learn that just approximately one in every four children gets the necessary 60 minutes of physical activity per day.

In general, as a child’s age and school grade increase, so does their participation in all sorts of physical activity. Physical activity should be a regular component of family life, and this should be encouraged. This post looks at some ways you can support your child’s physical health.  Of course, with all this activity, there’s a chance of bumps and bruises along the way. If you are looking for dentists in avon lake oh to ensure your child’s dental health is also in top shape, a quick web search or a call to your pediatrician should help you find qualified professionals nearby.

Encourage Active Play

Either adults or children can organize active play. There are numerous games to play outside, including hopscotch, jump rope, dodgeball, Frisbee golf, badminton, volleyball, and active inside games such as Simon Says and other board games. You can get your kids a carlton badminton set to keep them active in a fun way while also supporting their development skills and confidence too.

Plan outings to a nearby bowling alley, swimming pool, or skating rink while those facilities are available, depending on the season.

Encourage Helping With Chores

Engage your children in physical outside duties such as raking leaves, removing weeds, watering plants, sweeping the pathways, cleaning the garage, and other activities. Make tasks more enjoyable by listening to uplifting music while doing them, and encourage everyone to work together to complete them as a family.

Practice What You Preach

Do not think of physical activity as a chore, but rather as a necessary part of taking good care of your body and health. Find activities that you enjoy doing and commit to being physically active for at least 30 minutes five days a week. It is more likely for your children to imitate your conduct if they witness you enjoying time outdoors.

Keep It Fun

The last thing you want to do is to turn it into a chore, so make sure you stick to physical activities that are fun and age-appropriate. Focus on what they enjoy doing and help them do it as much as possible, be it heading to the park to run around, going for a swim, heading to an after-school club, or climbing on the jungle gym at home. This way, your child won’t realize they are ‘exercising’ as such instead of just enjoying themselves.

Make Time For Exercise

When school is in session, if your children can walk or bike to and from school, they can reap many of the physical and mental benefits of being active while saving you money on petrol. When school is out or on the weekend, use this time to get out and about. If you schedule time in your day or week to get some exercise in, it will soon become a regular habit, and you won’t even notice you are doing it while still preparing the benefits.

Use Screen Time To Your Advantage

Your children can engage in physical activity by playing interactive video games that simulate outside activities such as tennis, bowling, or baseball when going outside isn’t an option. You can also incorporate dancing videos and active video games into your television viewing time to keep you physically active.
