Sensitive. Vulnerable. Scared. Just a few words that you might be feeling with this subject. It is completely understandable. I have had a lot of dental work done, and it can be absolutely brutal. The sessions alone can be uncomfortable and at times painful.
Though, when you find a good doctor, they make getting things done like dental implants a breeze. I had a couple I tried and did not like, but then found a way to find my perfect dental surgeon fit. Here are the three things that should make your selection process easier.
1) Make Sure The Doctor Is Qualified To Give You Dental Implants
Just being a dentist is not enough. You have to find someone who is a trained and certified surgeon. Specifically, you’re looking for someone who specializes in oral and maxillofacial types of surgery. They also need to either be trained in using the “nighty nighty juice” they give you during these procedures, anesthesia. If they do not personally have that training, someone on their staff needs it.
I personally suggest looking for someone who goes the extra mile and participates in other professional medical organizations. The American Dental Association is an example. I found someone who also associates regularly with the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
2) Find Someone Who Will Meet You And Give Your Their Opinion For Free
Do not settle for the first dental surgeon you meet with. Even if you really like them. Make a plan to meet with at least two, if not three, potential surgeons. And if you do not like any of the three, go ahead and meet some more. This is a very vulnerable situation and you deserve to feel comfortable.
Before you go to a meeting, write down a list of questions you have. Right after you are done with a meeting take notes on how you felt and any questions that might have come up. You can call the office back later and ask them anything you have come up with.
3) Look For An Office With Advanced Machines And Techniques
What does this even mean when you are not working in a surgical dental office? Really, you probably w ill not understand the different machines they have to help out. So I have figured out a question that can help you at least feel out the answer: “Please talk about the recent updates you have had with any equipment and surgical techniques.”
I did some research before meeting with anyone. From what I have read it is best if they have a superior 3-D imaging machine and radiography. Then you know they will be able to take really clear images of what’s going on in your mouth. You can also find bonus features for example if they use extra techniques like using platelets from your own blood to speed up the healing process.
In Conclusion
Getting dental implants is an incredible journey, but make sure you have the right team. Do some “due diligence” research so you know the surgeon you pick is the perfect fit for you. You cannot afford to have someone inexperienced in your mouth. After you have checked off these boxes you will be on your way to an incredible smile!
