Charleston, South Carolina is without a doubt one of my favorite cities in the world. I treasured every second of the time that I went to college there and even more so when I moved out to the Isle of Palms; a gorgeous barrier island right off the coast that is only accessible via a bridge. Wild Dunes Resort is arguably the heart and soul of the island and is one of the leading resorts in the United States. It was there that I chose to celebrate my graduation from university with my family over a decade ago. Now I returned, years later, however this time I was on a family weekend getaway and would be experiencing a different side of both the island and the resort. The resort is massive, occupying 1,600 acres of oceanfront property, with accommodations ranging from hotel rooms to condos to private homes. Despite its grandeur, it is still possible to feel as though you are the only one on the island, especially if you visit during the off-season when there are less tourists and yet the weather is still lovely.
We stayed in a two-bedroom condo in the Village at Wild Dunes. It is the center of all of the resort activity and just a short walk from the beach. Guests can choose from one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites and penthouses, all of which are fully furnished and tastefully decorated in the casual elegance of the Lowcountry and enjoy all the amenities of the hotel.
The master bedroom in our condo was spacious and attached to it was an equally spacious balcony that had a table and chairs with a sweeping view of the island. The ultimate in luxury to me is being able to lay in your bed and hear the sounds of the ocean in the distance.
The second bedroom was also a comfortable size. In both bedrooms were flat-screen TVs, reading chairs, large closets, and en suite bathrooms. I highly recommend a two-bedroom for a family of three or four or two couples traveling together.
There are two modern bathrooms attached to both bedrooms, which are equipped with all of the necessary amenities and bath products. The master bathroom has a large jacuzzi that everyone in your party will want to use.
The living/dining room is the perfect size regardless of how many people are staying in the condo. It contains a flat-screen TV and high speed internet, in case you do not want to disconnect completely on your vacation. It also has a fully equipped kitchen for all of your cooking needs. Other bonuses in these suites include a sleeper sofa and a washer and dryer.
Why It Is Andi’s Pick
There is no doubt that the number one reason to visit Wild Dunes Resort is the gorgeous Isle of Palms beach that you will never want to leave. Having said that, activity plays center-stage here if you find yourself needing a break from the ocean. Ride along paved biking trails. Head out on a kayak or canoe adventure. Of course, work on perfecting your putt and your forehand. Hungry? The restaurants throughout the resort are renowned for their fresh seafood, excellent service, and gorgeous views. And if you want to experience true Southern hospitality, the hotel’s spa is a must — treatments are derived from botanical extracts, seaweed, mud, and natural enzymes. There is also a fire pit that everyone gathers around in the evenings to roast s’mores.
