Asheville, North Carolina (Day 1)

December 26, 2016

I discussed our main reason for visiting Asheville, North Carolina in a recent post. I was invited, along with my husband and son, to participate in Hike NC! by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. Hike NC! is an initiative aimed at making hiking an easier, more approachable experience for North Carolinians across the state. After we agreed to the hike, we searched for the perfect cabin in the mountains. If you have never visited the Blue Ridge Mountains before, you must put it on your Bucket List immediately! It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to and every time I go I fall more and more in love. While searching for accommodations, we came across a luxury retreat in Whisper Mountain that we fell head over heels for the second we saw the pictures. Whisper Mountain is about a twenty minute drive away from downtown Asheville.

If you are planning a trip to Asheville, I highly recommend going during the fall. The foliage is unlike anything you have ever seen. Of course, I have a sweet spot for winter in the mountains as well, but I definitely think that autumn is truly a magical season there. We happened to be going during the peak week and the trees welcomed us with their brilliant colors. As we pulled up to the cabin, we instantly felt like we were “home.”

On a side note, while I have covered my ultimate tips for traveling with a child already, Lucas and I discovered a couple of more on this vacation that I would like to share. First, we decided to book a place with multiple rooms instead of just a single hotel room. This way, Joaquín would have his own space just like at home, which would allow us all to get better sleep. We also brought his crib, crib mattress, and monitor (I realize that this is only possible if taking a road trip). On top of that, we brought a new toy to keep him entertained when we needed a moment to ourselves.  We timed our drive to fit his nap schedule perfectly and allowed him to watch his favorite movies on a DVD player when he was awake in the car. Before we arrived to our cabin, we stopped at a local grocery store and picked up food that we knew he would love in case he did not like the food in the restaurants (our son is a picky eater). Our main goal was to make sure he was happy, because then we were happy!

The second we arrived, Joaquín was ready to explore. The weather was unexpectedly warm and while in the midst of changing him into cooler clothes, he escaped out the front door in just a shirt and a diaper. Instead of fighting him to come back in, I decided to let him have fun however he felt most comfortable.

One of my favorite things about the cabin we stayed in was that it was surrounded by miles of hiking trails. Our son loves to be outdoors as much as possible, so he was in heaven with all of this wide open space to traverse.

Before I knew it a couple of hours had passed and it was time to head back inside. We cooked a delicious Italian dinner and ate it in front of the wood burning fireplace. Afterwards, we all took a nice, long jacuzzi bath together. It was the perfect ending to the perfect day!
