How To Live A More Sustainable Life?

December 12, 2020

If you have made a goal to live more sustainably in 2021, good for you. We all should take steps to love our planet a little more. But what does living sustainably really mean? Are you now going to have to walk everywhere? Can you still enjoy new clothing or new shoes?

The good news is that sustainability does not have to feel like self-deprivation or punishment. There are many steps you can take to live a more sustainable life that are actually enjoyable. Let us take a look at a few to get you started.

Become Friends With Your Neighborhood Thrift Store

If you have not caught the thrifting bug yet, it is time. Shopping for clothing at a thrift store is like going on the most exciting treasure hunt. You never know what awaits you and what amazing vintage finds lie in store. Do not forget to donate your gently used clothing to thrift stores as well, especially if they are quality brands. Your New Balance shoes, when still in good shape, can become someone else’s motivation to start exercising. Sharing and re-using clothing is one of the most environmentally conscious actions you can take in the New Year.

Shop Ethically

Do your research before you buy anything. Learn which companies have a sustainability policy in place and which ones do not. Vote with your dollars for the companies that are protecting our planet. For example, if you find a Birkenstock sale, head on over to their website and check out their stats. Do they have green initiatives in place? What is their policy on excessive packaging? You will find that Birkenstock is indeed taking steps toward a sustainable product, and therefore is a good company to support.

Get Your Own Keep Cup

What is a keep cup, you ask? This is the cup you take to the coffee shop and get refilled every time you order a cup of joe. Disposable coffee cups have a waterproof plastic lining and are therefore not recyclable. In addition, everyone ought to have their own stainless steel, glass, or recycled plastic water bottle by now. Instead of purchasing a water bottle at the corner bodega every time you get thirsty, get in the habit of carrying your water with you and refilling it when necessary.

Hop On The Bus, Gus

No, you do not have to walk everywhere, but you should give public transportation a try whenever you can. If you are fortunate enough to be considering a move to a new home in 2021, look for locations that are close to public transportation and have walkable neighborhoods. You will be amazed at how liberating it is to not have to depend upon a car for every trip you take. And of course, if you want to walk, do it! All you need is a nice pair of Asics shoes or other walkers and the determination to get out of your comfort zone.

Are you excited now? Great! Let us make 2021 the year that everyone begins to live a more sustainable life.
