CBD Oil For Dogs And Cats

November 2, 2020

In recent times, scientists and researchers have developed a serious interest in the use of CBD oil for pets, specifically dogs and cats. Of course, people have been using the substance for treating medical conditions like chronic pains, anxiety, insomnia, etc. Perhaps, it is the effectiveness of CBD oil in treating different health conditions in humans that triggers research into the possibility of using it for dogs and cats.

However, there have been several studies on the effects of CBD oil in humans for many years. And some of these studies suggested that it is relatively safe, and effective to use CBD products for certain medical conditions.

But research into the use of CBD oil for dogs, cats, and other pets are still in their early stage. And even if you are getting the best CBD oil for dogs and cats, you may still ask questions relating to safety, efficacy, dosage, and many more. Again, you can ask your veterinarian for information regarding the use of CBD oil for dogs and cats. If you live in a state that prevents veterinarians from recommending CBD for pets, most veterinarians may not want to discuss the effect of CBD oil on your dog or cats.

But different anecdotal evidence shows that CBD oil helps to treat conditions like chronic pains, anxiety, and seizures in dogs and cats. Also, most CBD studies in animals, focused mainly on pain reduction and pain control.

For instance, in 2018, researchers at Cornell University published a study in Frontiers in Veterinary Science on the pharmacokinetics, safety, and clinical efficacy of cannabidiol in osteoarthritic dogs.

The result from the study revealed that CBD oil has no observable side effects on dogs and other pets. And for dogs that participated in the study, there was a significant decrease in pain and an increase in activities.

Similarly, more recent research supervised by Stephanie McGrath, MS, DVM, DACVIM (Neurology), an Assistant Professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences at the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, investigated if CBD could treat idiopathic seizures in dogs. Applied Basic Science Corporation funded the study.

However, the study focused on a small group, and it revealed that there was 89% reduction in seizures frequency in dogs that took CBD at 2.5mg/kg q12h compared to a 43% reduction in the control group. And both studies were receiving conventional anti-epileptic drug therapy.

Some additional studies are currently ongoing in different areas including in cats and other species. But there is no information about their findings now because the studies aren’t completed yet.

Interestingly, Gary Richter, the owner of the Holistic Veterinary Care and Rehabilitation Center in Oakland, believed that some studies are currently ongoing to describe the pharmacokinetics of CBD and examine the perfect dosage to administer to pets suffering from different conditions. In a nutshell, researchers are exploring other conditions in pets other than arthritis pains and seizures that can be treated with CBD. If you are interested in using CBD for your pets, make sure to check out wholesale CBD pet products for the best price.
