How To Improve Your Garden In Time For Summer

March 16, 2022

There are many benefits to giving your garden a makeover in time for summer. For example, it can be a great way to spend more time outdoors as a family, host a dinner party, and can even help you when it comes to selling your home by improving your curb appeal. What is more, spending more time outdoors is good for your mental and physical health, especially regarding stress and anxiety management and reduction.

Do not worry if you are a renowned houseplant-killer or have never picked up gardening tools before — as there are plenty of tips and tricks that you can use to bring your garden to life!

  • Put together a budget. The first step towards any renovation project should be putting together a budget — as this will help you to manage your expectations moving forward. For example, while you may love to spend thousands of pounds completely transforming your garden, this is not always possible (or necessary). Having a clear budget in mind ahead of time will help you decide what tasks to carry out, who to hire to support you, and more.
  • Choose the right plants. Whether you want to create a beautiful flower garden or are choosing a more tropical design, the first step towards creating the perfect summertime garden is choosing the right plants. For example, you should think about how much time you have to dedicate to gardening, available space, and the kind of climate that you live in. Spring is often the best time to start planting so that you are able to enjoy the fruits of your effort during summer.
  • Add the wow-factor with a pool. Adding a pool to your garden will guarantee years of fun and excitement for your family — and could also be a great way to teach your little ones how to swim. It is also a great way to add value in your home (an average increase of 7% or more). However, you should also look into heating your pool so that you are able to use it all year round and not just when the sun is shining. You could learn more here.
  • Set up a vegetable patch. Often, renovating your garden and living an eco-friendly lifestyle go hand in hand. For example, you could set up a vegetable patch in your garden so that you no longer have to buy products from grocery stores. This reduces your carbon footprint and can save you money every single month. This is also a great way to try out new recipes with the things you grow.
  • Think about lighting. To make the most of your garden space, you have to focus on creating the right atmosphere. One way in which you can achieve this goal is through lighting — especially if you would like to host evening dinner parties and the sun is not on your side. For example, you could install solar panel lights along your fence, helping to brighten up your garden. Alternatively, you could string fairy lights around to create a magical atmosphere that everyone will love.
  • Repaint your fences. Repainting your garden fences might take a bit of time and effort, but it can truly transform your space. While you may be tempted to opt for a more traditional color (matching the natural shade of the wood), do not be afraid to go for a splash of color either. Alternatively, painting your fences white or cream can make your garden look bigger due to the way in which it reflects light. It will also help make your flowers and plants truly ‘pop.’
  • Installing decking. Regardless of the size of your garden, breaking it into separate sections can be a great way to utilize the space and, once again, can make your garden seem bigger than it is. One way you can better divide the space is through the decking.
  • BBQ Space. If you are planning on hosting your fair share of dinner parties during the summer months, then you cannot go wrong with setting up a space for BBQs. For example, you could purchase a new grill or show your old one some TLC to have it looking good as new. What is more, this will make putting together a menu for dinner parties much easier.
  • Buy (or DIY) some garden furniture. Garden furniture, such as tables and chairs, is essential if you want to make more use of your garden. However, it can also be quite expensive to purchase these items, which is hard if you are planning on sticking to a budget. Thankfully, there are various other options available to you. For example, you could DIY some furniture by trying your hand at woodwork. Alternatively, you can purchase items second-hand and then upcycle them. After all, a fresh coat of paint can go a long way!
  • Be creative with garden decor. You would be surprised at how much a few small changes can impact your garden design during renovation projects. As a result, you should find as many ways as possible to show off your tastes and personality — such as through garden sculptures or creative floral displays.
  • Hang a few bird feeders. Providing you do not have any cats, hanging bird feeders in your garden is a great way to encourage some wildlife to stop by, which can be incredibly peaceful and also great for budding photographers. You can even make your bird feeder with your kids so that you can bring some birdsong into your space.
  • Stay on top of your gardening. Whether you are experiencing harsh weather or the glorious sunshine, your garden is constantly changing. This means that there is always work you can be doing — especially if you choose to plant a range of fruits and vegetables in your garden. While this does not mean that you have to spend every single day in your garden — you should put together a gardening schedule. This is due to the fact that the best gardens are well-maintained through consistency. For example, you should ensure that all plants receive enough water to grow and flourish.
